Blu Discusses Being Offered Deal By Suge Knight

Blu has finally confirmed what some industry insiders have known for a while: Suge Knight was once interested in signing him.

The Los Angeles emcee spills the details in an interview with Jeff Weiss, who interviewed him for L.A. Weekly's cover story on Los Angeles' emerging crop of rappers. Faced with the possibility of pursuing deals with Death Row or Roc-A-Fella Records, Blu decided to spurn both and link with upstart indie Sound in Color, which distributed his critically acclaimed Below the Heavens, release in August 2007.

"My cousin was engineering at Death Row and he played the CD for Suge right when he got out [of prison], and had already signed Left Eye and Crooked [I]," Blu said. "My boy told me, just come with me and we'll get signed by either Suge or Roc-A-Fella."

Death Row Records, besides Kurupt's 2004 album, Against Tha Grain, has not released an active artist's album of new material since Michel'le, Knight's spouse at the time, released Hung Jury one decade ago.

He should have done it, it could have given him some publicity and broken underground into mainstream. I'm not a big fan of Blu, but it would have been good for hip-hop. Murs debuted top 50 and Termanology and Heltah Skeltah didn't even make the top 200 (despite what I thought to be much better albums). Why? Cause Murs had major label push, and its good to see underground rappers still spit underground but get recognition.

Blu is the future, i did an interview with him in July, an 1h43 interview, for those who want it hit me up in mp (i still got to finish to write it)
and that's good that he didn't signed with suge knight, look what happened with crooked i, and look at Blu who released 3 official albums in 13 months, and don't worry for him he's well know by others rappers and producers

It has nothing to do with how well known he is in the rap community, it has to do with getting promotion. Underground artists with major label deals do substantially better without changing their style. It's just that fact that he could spread his music to more people, which I would say is any real musicians goal.
