BMI Honors The Jackson 5, T-Pain Nabs Songwriter Of The Year Honors
Published: Monday - September 8, 2008 Words by Miles Bennett The BMI Urban Awards took place in Los Angeles on Thursday (September 4), with the Jackson 5 as the stars of the show. Singers such as Mario, Lloyd, Ray J and Keri Hilson, all joined in to help paid tribute to the legendary group, who received BMI's Icon Award. The Jackson brothers did attend, just not all of them. Jackie, Marlon, Tito, and Randy all made it, while brothers Jermaine and Michael Jackson left their brothers hanging. When asked where Michael was, Marlon responded, "I don't know. I think he's in Egypt riding a camel or something," according to the Associated Press. The Jackson 5 -- which originally included Michael along with Marlon, Jackie, Tito and Jermaine -- was a best-selling act that debuted on the 1969 album, Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5. Their careers boast hits such as "ABC" and "I Want You Back." After they left Motown in 1976, they became the Jacksons, replacing Jermaine with Randy. "It's a great honor to know your music influenced a generation," said Tito. "We're very proud of this moment." During the tribute, dance troupe Jabbawockeez performed a funky "Dancing Machine" routine, while group ONE sang "I Want You Back." JoJo and Lloyd later partnered on "I'll Be There," before Mario unleashed his rendition of "Heartbreak Hotel," and Keri Hilson crooned "Who's Loving You." The finale featured Mario, Bobby Valentino, Lloyd and Ray J teaming up for "Never Can Say Goodbye." The big award of the night, the Songwriter of the Year went to T-Pain, who contributed to seven hits over the past year, including "Good Life," "I'm A Flirt," "Cyclone," "Low," "Bartender," "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')," and "Shawty." Other winners of the night included Soulja Boy, Polow Da Don, Rodney Jerkins and DJ Montay. The Song of the Year honor went to Ne-Yo. Source: ballerstatus
