Termanology Speaks On Big Pun Likeness, “Anybody That’s Puerto Rican, They’re Gonna Compare You To Pun”

Prepping his highly anticipated debut album, up-and-coming East Coast rapper Termanology talked with SOHH about what fans can expect, linking up with Houston vet Bun B and his upcoming collaboration album with M.O.P.’s Lil’ Fame.

As previously reported by SOHH, the Massachusetts-bred, New York-based artist is releasing Politics As Usual next month with a strong line-up of producers including DJ Premier, The Alchemist, Havoc, Hi-Tek and others. Term explained where the idea to debut with such established figures came from.

“A few years back I told myself, ‘Yo, you know what, I’mma do an album. And I’mma do it with all the people I looked up to as a kid’,” he told SOHH. “I started naming ‘em off, I’m like Premo, Pete Rock, Alchemist, Large Professor.”

Admitting that “it took me about two years but it was crazy”, the half-white, half-Puerto Rican emcee revealed how he also linked up with UGK’s Bun B resulting in their Premo-produced collabo “How We Rock.”

“One day Premier just told me that Bun B had called him and he had said he wanted to work with me,” he explained. “I got his number. I started chopping it up with him [and] I went and chilled with him on his birthday in Houston.”

Clearing up rumors and allegations that he’s tagged himself the “new” Pun, Term explained the difficulty in being Hispanic and having to be compared to the late lyrical emcee.

“It’s a tough thing ‘cause like anybody that’s Puerto Rican, they’re gonna compare you to Pun, no matter what,” he stressed. “That’s the box we get put in. But I just felt like, when I compare myself to Pun, it’s more like a lyrical thing. It just happens to be like, you know my style is kinda similar, ‘cause I pretty much bit my style from Kool G Rap and Pun was heavily influenced from G Rap, also.”

Already making plans for after his album hits stores, Term revealed an upcoming full-length collaboration album with Lil’ Fame that they’ve been working on for nearly two years, which “will hopefully coming out by January 2009.”

“Right now I’m working with Lil’ Fame a lot, from M.O.P,” he said. “We got like 20 tracks together. My next album is going to be me and him. We’re doing an album together. It’s kinda like a Gangstarr type feeling. He’s doing all the beats and I’m rhyming on it.”

Politics As Usual hits stores September 30 on ST Records/Nature Sounds Records.
