07/29/08 - Dozens Waited For 50 Cent - New Movie 'Before I Self Destruct'

Dozens of fans waited opposite School 13 on Monday, straining their necks for a glimpse of rapper 50 Cent.

"If you want to see a star, you have to go through hell," complained Kashawn Norris, who was with her family. "I should have stayed in my house. I got his picture in my house."

Before long, Norris got her wish, as the rapper, clad in dark jeans, a matching T-shirt and a red baseball cap, emerged from the school. A cheer went up from the crowd. Camera phones were whipped out, and the flashes started.

Norris clapped her hands in joy as her face broke into a smile.

For the past week, 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, has been using the city as the backdrop for his film, "Before I Self Destruct." The title is also the name of his forthcoming album.

One lucky Paterson youngster who was making her film debut was 11-year-old Shanasia Parker, who was among the group of students in the school shot.

"She was very excited," said her father, James Parker, 42, who said his daughter wants to be an actress when she grows up.

Jamie Bland, who runs Jump Start, which teaches life skills to students, played a teacher in the movie.

She described the day of filming as "wonderful."

"This was a positive thing for [the children]," she said, "because they got a chance to see positive role models and see people who are successful fulfilling their career goals. This is motivational for them. It helps build and mold the kids for the future."

Children, mothers and some grandmothers were among those waiting for the hit-making rapper. Many had heard that last week 50 Cent met fans, signed autographs and took pictures when he filmed at the now-empty Alexander Hamilton Housing Development, and they hoped he would do the same on Monday.

In the afternoon, the rapper came outside of the school building and waved at the gathering.

Nicole and Na-koyiss Jackson, no relation to the rapper, showed off the photographs they took with 50 Cent at Alexander Hamilton last week. They said they were touched by how down-to-earth he seemed to be.

"He is more humble," than he appeared on television, Nicole Jackson said. "He was very approachable. He loved the kids."

uhhhh if your talkin bout GRODT it didnt flopp.....tha movie was made for 40 mill and made 46 worldwide......if you brake even in movie sales its not a flop.....Ive heard of certain movies being made for 80 mill an only making 18 at tha box office....now thas a flop!
