Rock Steady Crew Celebrates 31st Anniversary in NYC, DJ Premier, KRS-One and The Beatnuts Perform

July 26 is the official Rock Steady Crew Day in New York City, as proclaimed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The city will celebrate the iconic break-dancing group from the late ‘70s, sandwiching their big day within a four-day weekend of events commemorating old-school hip-hop.

The Rock Steady Crew will celebrate its 31st anniversary starting tomorrow, July 24 until July 27 with a host of activities including rap battles reminiscent of the ‘80s.

The event will feature a celebrity benefit basketball challenge, workshops and a funk party on Thursday; a Frienemies B-boy challenge pitting a UK spitter against an American rapper on Friday; the 5 vs. 5 crew battle and Spy Awards show on Saturday; and the 3rd Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival on Sunday.

The music festival will be free and held at Lincoln Park in Newark, NJ form 12 – 8 p.m. Artists scheduled to perform include: The Beatnuts, Buckshot, Craig G & Marley Marl, Sadat X, Soul Sonic Force, Positive K, Grand Master Caz, DJ Premier featuring NYG'z & Blaq Poet, Termanology & DJ Statik Selektah, Akrobatik, Skyzoo, “Miss Rap Supreme” herself, Rece Steele and KRS-One, among others.

Specific info on the celebrity basketball participants hasn’t been released, but a press release promises “members of the hip-hop and film community” will come out to play.
