Qwote, a Haitian artist newly signed to Miami based Slip-N-Slide Records [click to read], is currently riding high due to the regional success of his Air Supply-sampled hit with Trina, “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Qwote recently sat down with HipHopDX to discuss the political and civil unrest in his nation of origin, as well as the acquittal of Sean Bell’s killers, and music in general.

When talking about Haiti, and the more recent political problems that have been in abundance there since the early 1990s, Qwote expressed a keen interest in helping his peoples, in an effort similar to the one that Wyclef Jean has made over the years. “Well, I mean definitely as a person, these are my peoples. Of course I feel for them, it hurts, to hear that they are eating dirt… I mean you know, that’s not something that you want to hear, because they’re starving and there is no food, I mean its hard on my heart. As an artist, in any way that I can give back to the country or get the word out that they need help, I’m there, I mean if it means using my talents as a singer and a writer than so be it.”

After initiating a conversation on social issues, the acquittal of Sean Bell’s murderers was an obvious topic for discussion. “It’s a sad situation. I do have personal feelings about that incident, but I try to stay as far away from the political matters as it is, but personally, that’s just a sad situation. I don’t know all the details, and I’m just going based on media reports, but based on what I’m hearing and what I see, there are just a lot of things that don’t make sense… Dude got shot so many times, but what happened? I mean I don’t know the whole situation and I cannot say it is what it is but I can tell you what I read and what I’ve seen on the news. Simply, its just a tragedy."

Lastly, Qwote elaborated on his upcoming debut, “I just came back from working with J.R. Rotem, he’s real professional and a talented dude. Also, I’m thinking about doing something with Sean Kingston, we spoke about that. T-Pain as well, that’s another feature we are working out. As far as producers are concerned, I’ve been working with Lil Jon, Mr. Collipark, Brian Cox, Scott Storch, Jim Johnson, just to name a few."
