Remy Ma's assault and witness tampering case began today (March 10) in Manhattan's state Supreme Court.

As reported earlier, Remy is accused of shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the abdomen when they got into a dispute after leaving a Manhattan nightspot in July 2007.

According to Reuters, Assistant District Attorney Jason Berland began his opening argument on Monday by stating that an infrutiated Remy armed with a gun, confronted Barnes-Joseph inside her car over money that was missing from her purse.

The two would then struggle over Barnes-Joseph's handbag and the weapon would go off leaving her wounded.

Berland then added that Remy fleed the scene and slammed her car into another parked vehicle, causing damage to both.

Remy was initially charged with attempted murder but the charges were dropped to assault after evidence revealed that the gun went off accidentally. The witness tampering charges stem from an August 2007 attack on the boyfriend of a witness at a Bronx nightclub which prosecutors claim Remy orchestrated with the help of her male friends.

"[Remy] is not the type of person to sit back and let people testify against her," Berland told the jury.

Remy's lawyer, Ivan Fisher, responded by saying that the incident was an accident and that Barnes-Joseph was twisting facts in hopes of gaining a large monetary settlement from Smith.

"This case will leave you with enormous doubt," Fisher said.

Remy, who has denied the charges, could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. She is free on $250,000 bail.
