KRS-One Signifies Stop The Violence With MLK
January 21st, 2008 Nearly 20 years after its initial launch via the "Self Destruction" single, the Stop the Violence Movement has returned. KRS-One has re-launched his non-profit, grassroots organization with a new cast of supporters including 50 Cent, Ludacris, Lil' Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross, Martin Luther King III, and others. While the original Stop the Violence Movement was focused more on violence within the Black community, the newer version finds KRS-One and his supporters broadening their scope. In an open letter announcing the reformation of the organization, KRS-One states, "We are in a state of emergency--school shootings, nooses being hung from trees, domestic violence, gang violence, police brutality and war. It is most appropriate that I announce the revitalization of the Stop the Violence Movement as we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 79th birthday." According to representatives from the Stop the Violence Movement, the organization will attempt to accomplish its goals of raising awareness, healing and moving toward truth and solutions through lecture tours, concerts, workshops, symposiums and media campaigns. In addition to current entertainers and community leaders, the Stop the Violence Movement has also enlisted the help of some original "Self Destruction" collaborators. Doug E. Fresh, Daddy-O of Stetsasonic, X-Clan affiliate Lin Que and representatives from the Zulu Nation have also agreed to help. Calls from HipHopDX to representatives of the Stop the Violence Movement were not immediately returned, but KRS-One also stated that a CD-soundtrack, film and an updated Stop the Violence Hip Hop anthem were all in the works. The organization plans to offer more information via their website , but at press time the site was not yet functional. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTPqzuzb7GE Source-hiphopdx
