Default 01/06/08 - Possible Gangsta Rap Ban in UK

01/06/08 - Possible Gangsta Rap Ban in UK

music could be on the horizon pending the outcome of a police investigation of a New Year's Day brawl in Reading, England.

According to the Reading Evening Post, authorities are looking into whether gangsta rap played a role in a fight that took place at 2:30 a.m. at Café du Sport.

A 24-year-old man was gouged in the head with a broken bottle as the ruckus moved from inside the club to outside the venue at St. Mary's Butts.

Officers, who tried to control the assault by using spray, were also attacked.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm following the brawl. He is currently released on bail until Feb. 1.

The cause of the incident, which involved 20 people, will be looked into next week when town centre inspector John Relph meets with the manager of Café du Sport.

If the music played at the club that night attracted a "hardcore minority of thugs", Relph will consider a ban on that music.

"If the general consensus throughout all town centre bars and clubs is that the heavier side of R'n'B, Hip-Hop and gangsta rap music attracts violence, Thames Valley Police will look into banning it," the inspector told the Evening Post. "The matter will first be discussed in depth with PubWatch, which overlooks clubs and bars in Reading."

Despite Relph's claims, Colin Charles, the promoter of the Café du Sport event, said the music played that night should not take the blame for violent behavior.

"This type of R'n'B is played in bars across Reading all the time and has nothing to do with gangsta rap music," he told the paper. "I have never experienced violence like this at one of my events before. The police are out of touch if they think old skool R'n'B and funky house from the 90s will make people violent. If anything should be banned from the town centre, it should be under 21-year-olds, trainers and sportswear - then you'll see a massive reduction in trouble.

if they banned gangsta rap worldwide you would see a huge drop in the amount of gang members black on black crime etc in a short amount of time. . the only reason the niggas in the u.k are dressing, having gangs and starting to beef with each other like that is because its transported through music, videos and d.v.d's - if rap was banned in the u.k from the get go then they wouldnt be having these problems, and in theory from a politicans point of view hip hop needs to be banned in the u.s . .its basically a promotion of illegal behaviour

What the fuck? The Charter of Rights and Freedoms PROTECTS that kind of discrimination. When you're banning a whole type of music, that mostly is a way of expression of the black community, you're indeed doing a huge discrimination. You cannot do so! It's prohibited, and against the law. They gonna tell me now that gangsta rap is causing violence in clubs now? Ok then, what about PUNK, HEAVY METAL, ETC, that praise violence MUCH MUCH MUCH more that gangsta rap, the skulls, the fire, etc...
What about Jackass shows, with Steve O, and fellows, that cause ruckus everywhere they go?!
Honestly banning any kind of music is unfair. Unless they ban everything!
They gonna tell me that clubs and cafes will turn to Opera concerts and classic music? This just doesn't make sense!

since when did making music that promotes gang violence, gun crime, drug taking , general crime, black on black violence, and prejudice to women appear on the charter of rights? . .making music that discusses such topics is generally fine . .but when people promote these things to the youth and distort there vision becomes a different topic

My friend, music is a type of expression. It's a way of expressing yourself. I don't care what the content can be. The Charter defends everyone's rights and freedoms. Singing about what you lived, what happened, what you did, is not promoting it. 50 Cent and Eminem are the first ones to tell you on the whole interviews that you're stupid if you do what you listen to!

there is a difference about music you make about experiences in your life, and being a multi millionaire that surrounds himself with ex fbi agents for security and then releases music to the masses and making it cool to have guns, take drugs and be overall a "gangsta" which basicallly resolves to commiting various crimes . . now not only is it morally incorrect but it also distorts truth and effects young peope mainnly black into buying into this culture which then leads to these crimes which then lead to taking peoples basic freedoms of being able to live without getting shot, stabbed, beat up

because 90% of rappers that make these songs arent doing anything of what there saying there all millionaires, surround themselves with security and then preach these topics which they have nothing to do with and over exsadurate . .the smart hip hop fans i.e myself and others know that what there saying is bullshit most of the time . .but other young people get caught up in the bullshit and it basically glamourises GUNS DRUGS CRIME WITH MONEY . . .

I dunno if your from U.K or ever lived out here but i do lemme tell you something real quick, drugs, gun crime, black on black violence has always been happening since way back its only more in the news now because the younger generation are now alot more involved. The issues is not to do with "Rap Music" thats a ignorant political answer blame it on the music or the games or movies it all comes down to being a product of your environment if you know no better you'll be no better straight up. There needs to be more oppertunity for young black males the system fails them time and time again untill thats changed its gonna be the same shit for many more years to come.
