11/06/07 - Jay-Z Taps 'Young Hov' For New Video

People have been telling him for years that he looks like Jay-Z. The 15-year-old kid from the Bronx even got a little internet fame, playing the part of Hov in his older brother's just-for-fun remakes of Jay-Z videos.

Now he's starring in a real Jay-Z video. Samgoma Edwards plays a young Hov in "Roc Boys (And the Winner is)," a single off Jay's American Gangster album. [Watch Here]

Samgoma was tapped for the video after well-known director Chris Robinson saw the four other Jay-Z renditions he'd starred in, directed by Samgoma's 23-year-old brother, founder of Team Guerilla Films and SOHH.com employee Samtubia Edwards.

The four-part tribute to Jay-Z, entitled the Young Hov Project, includes Team Guerrilla Films' own video renditions of Jay-Z's, "PSA," "Dear Summer," "Lucifer," and the "PSA Remix."

With his signature fitted covering his eyes, and the mogul's swag and hand-movements down, Samgoma makes for a very convincing Hov. But the team didn't have any expectations when they started putting out the videos in 2004.

"When we first started the project, it was just a practice project," Samtubia said. "We didn't spend a lot of money on them and we didn't expect anything. Then we got such a big response we did another one."

The videos became popular virally and really took off on YouTube.

The brothers were featured on SOHH, XXL and AllHipHop.

"We got noticed by Lil X and Just Blaze said he liked it a lot," Samtubia said.

Team Guerilla was actually planning on doing its own video for "Roc Boys" when Samtubia got the message on his YouTube mail, "wanting to know about the kid."

Samgoma went in for a screening with casting director Ulysses Terrero and "they loved him," Sam said.

"There was some nervousness," Samgoma said, "but they treated me real good."

And his lines were simple.

"I had to say 'The Roc boys in the building,'" Sangoma said, with the same effortless Jay-like swag as in the video. He got the part.

Meanwhile, his brother Samtubia got to chop it up on set with "Roc Boys" director, Chris Robinson.

"He said he really liked my work and he'd keep in touch," Samtubia said. "I got Chris Robinson's approval, y'know? So we're going from there."

"Roc Boys" is a star studded 3 minutes. Jadakiss, Puff, Nas, Beans, Freeway, Mariah Carey and others make cameos.

"I really just wanna see where everything from this video goes. It looks very promising," Samtubia said."What the Neptunes did with producers, we wanna do that with directors."

Samtubia has done videos for Blackhand Records rapper Grafh and some other underground artists. In addition to music videos he's directed short films and he's trying to break into commercials. But he has big plans for Team Guerilla, which consists of himself - the director, Samgoma - the actor, and Chris Alvarez - the producer .

When SOHH spoke with them, The Edwards brothers hadn't seen the video yet.

But by tomorrow, everyone will have.

"Tomorrow, when I go back to school I'm sure it's gonna be a little wild," Samgoma said. "Everybody knows about the Young Hov Project, so they think it's a real big deal. I'm getting a lotta play right now."

Great video, but why would you even add irv Gotti in your video are u kidding me...I see all winners in the video and then I see Irv G hahaha bad move... Now u have the Roc boys but watch the unit because I'm sure they will have something to say about this video... Let's not sleep on LL cool J diss exit "13" its a carrer crusher and Jay Z knows it so keep kissing ass because if 50 and LL attack the roc it will crumble....

/\/\/\ Irv Gotti was instrumental in Jay-Z's early success, he's still a boss at Universal, and he's gotta hit reality TV show... All after beating a fed case similar to the one Jacob the Jeweler just lost. Sounds like a winner to me.

As for LL Cool J? Please. He's just trying to do what he's seen Fif do many times, which is create some type of beef or tension as a media/publicity tool but it's not working with Jay because he's not playing into it. LL could never end Jay's career. As for 50 attacking Jay... It's not gonna happen. G-Unit is not strong enough right now. Curtis was a disappoinment just like every other G-Unit release since The Massacre. They need to concentrate less on publicity stunt beef and more on making good music right now cause "Wanna Lick" is not gonna get it...

/\/\/\Kanye dresses like a European, not necessarily like a fag. Besides that, Kanye is THE BIGGEST dude in rap right now with the best album (IMO) this year. He is also an official "Roc Boy" so of course Jay would've had Kanye in the video. I heard that he was out of the country promoting Graduation when they filmed and that's the only reason he wasn't in the vid. As far as your IG comments... Wow. Did Irv rape your mother or kidnap your kid sister or something? Or is it that you are so attached to Curtis' nutsack that it hurts your eyes and ears to see or hear from anyone who has had differences with G-Unit? You don't have to like them, but why else would Irv and Kanye make you so mad?
