11/06/07 - Jay-Z Pulls American Gangster from iTunes

If you’re looking to purchase the new Jay-Z album, which hits stores today, don’t bother checking Apple’s iTunes music store. Citing the cinematic feel of American Gangster, Hova has decided not to allow it to be sold on the popular digital music outlet. According to Jay, he feels the project—which is a concept album based on the Denzel Washington film of the same name—should be digested as a whole, and not as single tracks. “As movies are not sold scene by scene, this collection will not be sold as individual singles,” Jay said in a statement. Since its debut in 2003, iTunes has let users download individual tracks from officially released albums, allowing them to purchase only the songs they want rather than an entire LP. While the album is currently still listed on iTunes, customers will receive an error message if they attempt to purchase it. American Gangster will be available for digital download, in its entirety, at rocafella.com, amazon.com and rhapsody.com

Not that I am dying to go get it, but I cant stand Jay Z...he needs to retire again. Everything he does just seems to piss me off....but thats me...He's not even puttin up kanye or fiddy numbers lately...uhhh ohhh buzz on the internet is ja's highly anticipated "mirror" is more anticipated than hoves albums....bahahahaha I wonder who would sell more first week, hova or ja? bahahahahaha LOL

Jay's last album, Kingdom Come, made it to #1 on the Billboard 200 and is sold over 2X Platinum by now....plus, he made it to the top of Forbes Most Richest Rappers list with grossing over $34 million dollars in 2006....right above 50 cent......i'm not hating or anything but what the fuck are you talking about??? lol....you're crazy man

yea u gotta point, but to be fair, Hov didnt go up against anybody else when he released his album. he only went up against the 2nd week sales of the Game... so u cant realli compare like that.

I just gained even more respect for Hov. Radiohead release their cd last month on their own for the same reason.

It makes sense I would not want people buying just a couple tracks either, but it might hurt sales iTunes is a big outlet (might help album sales though).

It really does piece together nicely.

Smart artists ? More like artists who don't give a shit if they go plat, so check the underground and you prolly won't see a lot of there albums there.

Anyway, I gotta give Hov propz on this one. I mean, iTunes is prolly where half of the sales come from and he just pulled outta there so its kind of a huge stuntmove seeing if people buy the album as a whole or not. I don't really think Hov was going for sales this time though, I haven't seen much of any promo for the album and it seems he just wanted to put out the album for himself rather than for sales and the audience.
