11/05/07 - Akon & Rihanna Win Big At The World Music Awards

Akon took home three awards at yesterday's World Music Awards ceremony, held in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The Senegalese-born singer was titles the "World's Best-Selling R&B Artist," beating out competition that included Fergie, Beyoncé and Rihanna. Akon also picked up awards for "Africa's Best-Selling Artist" and the "World's Best-Selling Internet Artist."

"You are witness to seeing me receive any kind of award for music the first time in my life," Akon announced in his acceptance speech.

The only artist to take home more prizes was pop newcomer Mika, a Lebanese-born singer who currently resides in London. Mika won four awards - "Male Entertainer of the Year," the "World's Best-Selling New Artist," the "World's Best-Selling Pop/Rock Male Artist" and "Britain's Best-Selling Artist."

The evening also proved to be a spectacular one for Rihanna, who proved her prowess as an R&B superstar by winning "Female Entertainer of the Year" honors and taking the prize for the "World's Best Selling Pop Female Artist."

Celine Dion and Patti LaBelle were each bestowed "Legend Award" honors for their work

Celebrities in attendance included Denise Van Outen, rapper Shaggy, Avril Lavigne, Rihanna, and "Nip/Tuck" star Julian McMahon.
