J.Period Goes 'Gangster,' Ramps Up Mixtapes

October 19, 2007, 1:10 PM ET

Mixtape DJ J.Period has added film scoring to his resume with the upcoming "American Gangster." The DJ, who made a name for himself with "The Best of Lauryn Hill" mixtape, produced the background track for the movie's television trailer. "American Gangster" hits theaters Nov. 2; Jay-Z's album of the same name is due four days later.

The latter's "Heart of the City (Ain't No Love)" is the soundtrack to the film's theatrical trailer, while J.Period's track will be added to the TV commercials within the next two weeks.

"Originally Ridley Scott, the director, was going to use a classical piece," says J.Period. "Unfortunately, no one else liked it. So Interlink, the company that produced the first trailer, approached me to update a classical song from the Spike Lee film, 'The 25th Hour.'"

J.Period says he jumped at the opportunity. "The company really liked it and Universal really liked it," he reports. "For me, it's very prestigious because there's essentially only two songs used for the trailer."

In other news, J.Period has added rock mixtapes to his hip-hop and R&B arsenal. The DJ released "Searching for Rick Rubin" with the Afro-punk band Game Rebellion this week, featuring reworkings of the Beastie Boys' "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" and the Dixie Chicks "Not Ready To Make Nice."

J.Period says he's also working on an Alicia Keys mixtape, which should be out in time to coincide with Keys' new album, "As I Am," due Nov. 13 via J.

"I'm trying to break down the wall that exists with mixtape DJs and labels," says J.Period. "I'm essentially trying to make a legally cleared mixtape using Alicia Keys as a peg. I believe I can justify the risk of releasing a legitimate mixtape as a promotional tool."
