Everyone's scrambling to cash in on the ever growing Latino culture -- case in point, MTV launched MTV Tr3s in late 2006, targeting bilingual Latinos with music and entertainment.
But as the Los Angeles' Latino culture continues its rapid growth on the West Coast, hip-hop is becoming more and more one of Latinos' biggest influences. Via a new documentary, titled "La Revolúcion Es La Música," filmmaker Cleo Valente documents that influence, which is effecting the next generation of Latino Americans and discusses it with several key players within the Latino hip-hop crowd. "Latinos are not associated with hip-hop yet and I hope this [film] will make that bridge between the two," Valente said in a recent interview with RealTalkLA.com. "People always associate Latinos with salsa, cumbia, and reggaeton, but this is about the hip-hop movement in LA. These kids are the voice and it's time for them to be heard." Many of the artists interviewed for the upcoming documentary give positive advice for young Latino Americans who find themselves struggling with the idea of joining gangs and trying to find a place in society. It shows their everyday lives, the struggles they go through, and how hip-hop has given them an outlet to speak out and represent their growing culture. Valente has a lengthy Los Angeles history -- 25 years to be exact, but it was when she began working at MTV Tr3s that she became immersed in the culture. After linking up with producer Juan Rodriguez at an "LA Ink" casting call, she said the idea for her film was born. With the documentary, she plans to raise awareness of the LA subculture and its artist, who she feels does not get the recognition they deserve. Some of the artists featured on the film include Psycho Realm's Sick Jacken, DJ Muggs, the Visionaries' 2Mex, Big Latin, MC Magic, Down, Coolio, Diamonique, and many more. According to RealTalkLA, "La Revolúcion Es La Música" is slated for release in November. Its release will be celebrated with a wrap party and fundraiser on November 2nd at KGB Studio & Gallery.
