Update: Hip-Hop Mag Founder Pleads Guilty To Graff Charges

Prominent New York graffiti artist, magazine publisher and Echo associate, Alain "KET" Maridueña pleaded guilty to felony charges of defacing subway trains yesterday (September 27).

According to New York's Daily News, Maridueña will not serve any prison time under the terms of his plea agreements. However, he has been ordered to pay over $12,000 in fines and restitution.

If Maridueña, who uses the tag name KET, is caught committing another offense, it will be much harder for him to avoid jail time.

"He's a three-time loser now," one enforcement official told the Daily News. "If he takes another pinch, he's going to jail."

As SOHH previously reported, 36-year-old Maridueña was arrested in March after being indicted in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens for 11 incidents of felony criminal mischief after he allegedly tagged nine subway trains parked overnight on unused tracks, and vandalized a subway station and a building between 2004 and late last year.

"He's considered one of the Godfathers of Graffiti," said Sgt. Kevin Cooper of the NYPD's Transit Bureau. "All the younger writers in the area all look up to him."

After getting his start as a teenager, tagging trains in the 1980's, Maridueña gained fame across the world. His career includes painting at festivals in Europe, lecturing college students in the 1990s and publishing pop culture and fashion magazines including Stress.

A friend to fashion designer Marc Ecko, Maridueña served as an artistic consultant helping to develop a graffiti video game designed by Ecko Unlimited and helping him launch his magazine Complex .

Things began to go downhill for Maridueña last Fall. In October '06 police obtained a search warrant for his apartment after evidence from surveillance and interviews with graffiti writers lead investigators to him, Cooper said. His computer had photographs of the defaced subway trains, some with Mariduena standing before his work.

In recent weeks Mariduena has pleaded guilty to felony criminal mischief to settle cases brought in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
