08/27/07 - B.I.G. Lawsuit Drops Ex-Internal Affairs Big Wig

A former LAPD deputy chief of internal affairs was dismissed as a defendant last weekend, in a lawsuit accusing him of ordering warrantless searches on the work areas of detectives investigating the murder of Notorious B.I.G.

According to The Associated Press, on Friday (August 24) a Superior Court judge granted a motion by city attorneys asking that Michael Berkow be dropped as a defendant because he no longer works for the department.

The Police Protective League sued Berkow in March claiming on June 24, 2005, claiming he improperly ordered the search of thirty-five homicide detectives' work spaces. Berkow's investigation was in connection with a lawsuit filed by Biggie's family, alleging rogue LAPD officers were involved in the rapper's unsolved shooting death.

To make matters even more convoluted, Berkow is also a defendant in a sexual harassment case that originated while investigating the murder of Biggie Smalls. LAPD Sgt. Ya-May Christle filed a lawsuit against Berkow last year claiming he gave preferential treatment and promotions to several female officers in exchange for sex.

In addition to sexual harassment claims, Christle also charges that her computer was confiscated by Berkow and other members of internal affairs and that data she entered while investigating Biggie's murder was destroyed. After accusing Berkow of taking her computer she believes she was retaliated against. The trial is scheduled for September 24.

Berkow, who resigned from the LAPD, is currently serving as the chief of Georgia's Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department.

B.I.G. (born Christopher Wallace) was shot and killed on March 9, 1997 after a party at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. His murder is still unsolved.
