Al Sharpton Continues War On Rap Lyrics, Calls For End Of Gov't Funds To Labels
Thursday - August 9, 2007 Rev. Al Sharpton organized several rallies across the country on Tuesday (August 7) in a call for public divestment of the music industry until the "n-word" and lyrics degrading women are removed from hip-hop lyrics. According to Reuters, Sharpton is calling on the public for assistance to put pressure on several large entertainment corporations including Time Warner, Viacom and Vivendi, that he feels would be forced to clean up their artists' material if threatened by the withdrawal of government-run pension funds. "New York state has $3 billion invested in companies that use words like '@#*$%,' '@#*$%' and 'ho,'" Rachel Noerdlinger, spokeswoman for Sharpton's National Action Network told New York newspaper amNY. "They need to quit." Sharpton, who has long been an opponent of explicit rap lyrics and previously appeared at a similar rally in Detroit in June, specifically took issue with what he feels is hip-hop's over use of degrading language and lack of corporate censorship. "I'm here in Motown in Detroit as a symbol of when music was not denigrating and was entertaining," he told Reuters over the phone. While Sharpton is arguing that the matter is about decency, his argument is falling on deaf ears with others that contend that it is a financial issue. "We get all kinds of divestment calls and this is just the latest," said Clark McKinley, a spokesperson for the California Public Employees Retirement System, the largest pension fund in the U.S. McKinley contends that the goal of a pension is to maximize returns, not make moral judgements. jesus...thats something I dont get. If they say the n word in lyrics...it should technically be ok for ANYONE to sing along to it. Rap artists are making the word less meaningful!! if thats a good thing. I just dont want to be looked at funny if I am singing along to rap lyrics!!!!!!
