"We Can Do Better," BET Rethinks Charlie Murphy's "Hot Ghetto Mess"

Only days prior to its BET debut, Charlie Murphy's "Hot Ghetto Mess" has changed its controversial name to "We Can Do Better."

As previously reported by SOHH, State Farm Insurance Cos. and Home Depot requested to pull their ads from the show's July 25 premiere. Despite the pull, Murphy's rep contends that the name change had nothing to do with the controversy. Though the loss of advertisers had no bearing in the decision, the name change was an attempt to distance the show from the hotghettomess.com web site.

"The show is about the fact that as a society, we must do better," Murphy told SOHH via his publicist, Lyndsey Belle Tyler. "They wanted to put the emphasis there. Basically, people need to watch on Wednesday and formulate their own opinion."

Critics have reportedly complained that "Hot Ghetto Mess" perpetuates black stereotypes. Meanwhile, BET defends the program, saying that it's "a blend of tough love and social commentary."

Charlie Murphy's "We Can Better" premieres July 25 on BET.
