David Banner Sends 80 Kids On Six Flag Field Trip

Rapper David Banner, who has also been recognized as a humanitarian, made it possible for 80 teens from his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi to go on an all-expense paid field trip to Six Flags in Georgia on Friday (July 20).

This isn't the first time he's given youth in his hometown cool field trips. For the past three summers, the rapper has sponsored a free trip for his hometown youth by providing a bus, food, t-shirts and admission fees, for teens in the Stewpot Neighborhood Children's program.

Stewpot provides an atmosphere of love and second chances for all the children who pass through their doors. They offer both an after-school program and a summer camp for elementary, junior high and high school students. It focuses on providing a safe place for these children to go after school, as well as homework help, encouragement, structure and recreation in a loving environment.

Since 2005, Banner has sent more than 200 youth on a free trip outside of Jackson with hope to expose them to places they otherwise wouldn't have been able to experience. Many of the teens have never been out of the state of Mississippi and on Friday night many of them will witness their first live-concert, which will feature Omarion and Monica.

"The children that we serve at Stewpot would not normally be able to go on an 'out of town' trip," said Stewpot Community Services Counselor, Sherry Adams. "Most of the kids in the community have not been out of Mississippi. Because of Banner's love for our community, he makes it possible for our kids to travel outside of Mississippi, on a fun and exciting summer trip every year. David made it all possible because these kids don't have to pay a dime."

Banner is not only known for his hit single, but he's also recognized for his exuberant willingness to give to those who are in need.

In November 2006, David Banner was awarded a Visionary Award by the National Black Caucus of the State Legislature in recognition of his work after Hurricane Katrina (see "David Banner Honored For Humanitarian Efforts In Mississippi"). This move was criticized by conservatives within the state, as well as some civil rights leaders, who Banner has accused of failing to adequately aid Mississippi.

Banner is a good example of what people all over the world with money should be using it for. I see him more of a philantropist than an actual artist now because he's always giving chances to those who can't afford what he can.

For example, he's one of the producers on the Street Records Corporation website whose offering original beats for only 99 cents. This gives emcees who don't have much the opportunity to say that they got a David Banner record.
