Traveling Wilburys Join Rihanna Atop U.K. Charts
June 18, 2007, 1:00 PM ET As Rihanna starts her fifth week at the top of the U.K. singles chart with "Umbrella" featuring Jay-Z (Def Jam), there's a surprise name at No. 1 on the album bestsellers list. The Traveling Wilburys' "Collection" (Rhino/Warner Bros.), a compilation of the erstwhile supergroup's two original studio albums and other material, enters at No. 1. The Wilburys' albums had been unavailable for many years, and the chart-topping debut is aided by a deluxe edition featuring a DVD with videos and a documentary. The achievement is all the more remarkable considering the band's "Volume 1" album only reached No. 16 in 1988, while "Volume 3" hit No. 14 in 1990. In a week heavily influenced by purchases for yesterday's Fathers' Day, the top 10 of the album chart had a distinctly mature hue, also featuring Bon Jovi, the Police, Genesis, Hank Marvin, the Who and Paul McCartney. Bon Jovi's "Lost Highway" (Mercury) mirrored the band's last two albums by entering at No. 2, while the Police's self-titled new double CD collection on A&M/Polydor went in at No. 3. A newly augmented version of Genesis' "Turn It on Again -- The Hits" (Virgin), which like the Police album is being promoted around the band's renewed touring activity, appeared at No. 5. Early British guitar hero Hank Marvin, from the Shadows, climbed 13-6 with the newly-recorded set "Guitar Man" (Universal Music TV), to give him his highest-charting solo album ever. Rock of a more recent vintage was represented among the newcomers to the top 10 by Queens Of The Stone Age, whose "Era Vulgaris" (Interscope) debuted at No. 7. The Who's "Now & Then" compilation (Polydor), yet another to be reactivated in the light of their current touring, re-entered at No. 9 after reaching No.5 in 2004. McCartney's "Memory Almost Full" (Hearmusic) fell 5-10 in its second week. Rihanna's five-week reign over the singles chart was challenged by the White Stripes, whose "Icky Thump" (XL Recordings) climbed 13-2, and Enrique Iglesias, who made a 9-3 move with "Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)" (Interscope). There was an 18-4 climb for "Like This" (Columbia) by Kelly Rowland featuring Eve and a No.9 debut for Kelly Clarkson's "Never Again" (RCA). The Holloways' reissue of last year's "Generator" (TVT) gave the north London band a career-best No. 14 debut, while veteran rock outfit Marillion achieved a 22nd top 40 hit with "Thankyou Whoever You Are" (Intact) at No. 15. Newcastle-based rock act Maximo Park scored another hit with "Books From Boxes" (Warp) at No. 16 and Lee Mead, winner of BBC1's recent search to find a male lead for the new London production of the Lloyd Webber/Rice musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat," entered at No. 18 with "Any Dream Will Do" (Polydor). Mea will star in the show, which opens at the Adelphi Theatre on July 17. The Rihanna single tops Eurochart Hot 100 Singles for a second week, while Linkin Park is in a fourth week at the peak of the European Top 100 Albums chart with "Minutes To Midnight" (Machine Shop/Warner Bros.).
