Beyonce/Shakira, Monkeys Remain Atop U.K. Charts

Beyonce and Shakira held off the challenge of Manic Street Preachers while Arctic Monkeys withstood Michael Buble to remain atop of the U.K. single and album charts respectively yesterday (May 6).

"Beautiful Liar" (Columbia) is No. 1 for a third week, even though midweek figures had fellow Columbia act the Manics temporarily leading the pack. "Your Love Alone Is Not Enough" eventually settled for a 26-2 surge, the group's 14th U.K. top 10 in a span of close to 15 years. Their new album, "Send Away the Tigers," is released today.

Gym Class Heroes rose 8-3 with "Cupid's Chokehold" (Atlantic), some six weeks after the track peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another Columbia release, "Get Down" by Groove Armada featuring Stush, debuted at No. 9, remarkably the British dance team's first-ever U.K. top 10 single.

Hellogoodbye, the four-piece rock act from Huntington Beach, California, entered at No. 10 with "Here (In Your Arms)" (Epic). Their album, "Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!," is released here May 21. Also advancing on the new singles chart were "Lollipop" (Data) by Dada featuring Sandi Rivera & Trix, with a 58-18 climb, and the title track from Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" album, up 40-25.

Arctic Monkeys' second-week sales for their sophomore album, "Favorite Worst Nightmare" (Domino), were 81,000, compared to an opening tally of 227,000, but they were still well ahead of Buble's 44,000 for "Call Me Irresponsible" (Reprise). The single from the set, "Everything," climbed 42-38.

Ne-Yo's "Because of You" (Def Jam) arrived at No. 6, spurred by the top 10 success of its title track single, which dips 4-6 this week. Natasha Bedingfield's "N.B." (Phonogenic) arrived at No. 9, two weeks after its lead single, "I Wanna Have Your Babies," reached No. 7.

Modern rock veterans James, reunited after a 2001 split, opened at No. 12 with the new compilation "Fresh As a Daisy -- The Singles" (Mercury).

Rush debuted at No. 13 with "Snakes & Arrows" (Atlantic), the Canadian act's best U.K. album chart placing since "Roll the Bones" reached No. 10 in 1991. It's five months short of 30 years since Rush made its British chart debut with the "Farewell to Kings" album. Also new inside the top 20 was Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's "Baby 81" (Universal Island) at No. 15.

"Beautiful Liar" also climbs to the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles summit this week, 4-1, while Avril Lavigne is in a second week atop the European Top 100 Albums chart with "The Best Damn Thing" (RCA).
