A rally held Thursday protests derogatory rap lyrics.
Reverend Al Sharpton, in conjunction with the National Action Network, joined a march and rally Thursday (May 3) to protest derogatory rap lyrics. The march was organized by Tamika Mallory, director of the Decency Initiative for the National Action Network, and included Brooklyn City Councilwoman Darlene Mealy, and hip hop legend Kurtis Blow. The demonstration follows the controversy surrounding former shock jock Don Imus, who called misogynistic and violent hip hop lyrics into question, after his firing from MSNBC. Sharpton was instrumental in Imus' dismissal from the station. After the controversy, Sharpton decided to pull out of honoring Island Def Jam CEO LA Reid with the James Brown award at the National Action Network convention in April, to protest against artists who use offensive language. Commencing outside Sony Music on 55th and Madison, the throng of marchers made their way past major record labels, Warner Music Group, and the Universal Music Group before stopping at Columbus Circle on 8th Avenue. "We started by walking by the four major record labels," Sharpton spoke through a bullhorn. He stood atop an NYPD flatbed truck, outside the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle. "We will next be dealing with them one by one. We will also be dealing with the media companies. HBO is owned by Time Warner. When we finish the record companies, we will go across the board." The protest outside Time Warner marks the longstanding debate over rap lyrics and censorship, which Sharpton has been close to - particularly in its involvement with the heavyweight media conglomerate, Time Warner. In 1995, Sharpton told The Oregonian, "Yes, I have a problem as a parent with some of these lyrics, but I have even more of a problem with the right wing using this concern as an excuse to usher in censorship. That is not right and it will infringe on our First Amendment rights." He made the comments after a meeting with Time Warner executives, to protest the censorship of rap lyrics. "I told the Time Warner people that they should not in any way cave in to the pressure and protest," he continued. If they do, they will see protest from people like me, and we will have a lot of support from the black constituency. We will accuse them of playing presidential politics and using our children as political guinea pigs, and of creating a climate of regression and censorship." At Thursday's rally, Sharpton reiterated that point, making it clear he still does not advocate censorship of lyrics. "We're not asking for censorship. But there's a standard in this business. They had a standard that said Ice-T could not rap against police. They had a standard that said you couldn't rap against gays, and you shouldn't. They had a standard against Michael Jackson saying something they felt anti-Semitic. Where is the standard when it comes to 'nigga,' 'ho,' and 'bitch!?'" Protestors flanked Sharpton and TV cameras and chanted, "Stop the dirty lyrics," while wearing "No Justice, No Peace" t-shirts. "You've seen attacks on the record company," Sharpton said. "But you've never seen people in the actual community come out and protest and I think that is a huge difference they did not expect. And it's only going to grow." source - vibe

I think everybody should march against all this rallying, and defend Hip Hop.
That on top of a couple tracks dissing them and we should be cool

The fucked up thing about this is that he was partying in Las Vegas with Puffy, Jay Z and other rappers, and his response was that they are his friends and it shows how strong he his in his stance against bad words in rap music. He also said that he will be partying in the Hamptens with his friends(Puffy)and he will sure to wear all white so he won't disrespect the dress code. Now what kind of shit is that, I think I read this online at New York Post or New York Daily News.
