05/07/07 - Don Imus Enlists Former Attorney To Public Enemy In Lawsuit Against CBS

Don Imus has enlisted a former attorney of Public Enemy's to represent him in a lawsuit against CBS. Imus is preparing to sue the media company for $40 million. Martin Garbus, a free speech attorney who has represented Public Enemy and Spike Lee, released the following statement on behalf of Don Imus:

"We expect to file a complaint by the end of next week alleging breach of contract” Garbus stated. "The contract Imus originally signed with CBS shows that the company knew and agreed that the 66-year-old jocks content could, and would be unique, extraordinary, irreverent, intellectual, topical, controversial."

After Imus unloaded the now infamous “nappy headed hoe” comment on the women’s basketball team at Rutgers University, controversy mounted as sponsors withdrew financial support from the top rated, Imus in the Morning show. Imus was terminated by both CBS and MSNBC.

CBS stands behind their decision to fire Imus and vows to fight the suit, should it ever make it to court.

"We terminated Mr. Imus for cause," CBS said in a statement. "Based on the comments in question and relevant contract terms, we believe that the termination was appropriate and CBS would expect to prevail in any attempt by Mr. Imus to recover money for his actions."

it got out of hand when he got fired... why is he the only person to get fired for soemthin like this

what happen to freedom of speech... and the media twisted it to seem racist when it isnt really a racist comment... i have to agree with you on this one. But you have to remember that in this country there really is no such thing as freedom of speech everything people say in this country is censored
