05/05/07 - Busta Rhymes Driving $225G Bulletproof SUV On New York Streets

When rapper Busta Rhymes was busted in Manhattan early yesterday, he was cruising in a $225,000 armored SUV more suitable for combat than the city streets.

The 2006 GMC Yukon XL was customized over two months by a Long Island-based shop that caters to celebrities from Pamela Anderson to LeBron James.

And like 50 Cent, Rhymes had his SUV outfitted with darkly tinted bulletproof windows and the body reinforced with steel and Kevlar - a veritable luxury tank on wheels.

And it was precisely those windows that led to Busta being busted when they attracted the attention of police early yesterday morning.

Rhymes, born Trevor Smith, was released yesterday on $7,500 bail, hours after cops stopped him at W. 51st St. and 11th Ave. at about 12:40 a.m. for having excessively tinted windows.

Officer Jeffrey Rohe, armed with a tint meter, documented the violation - blocking out more than 70% of light transmission - and pulled over the SUV.

Cops asked Rhymes, 34, to roll down the window, but the security glass doesn't roll down. Instead, he got out of the vehicle, fumbled for his identification and dropped his wallet on the ground.

"I don't have my license on me," he told cops. "I had one shot of Hennessy about an hour and a half ago."

Police said Rhymes, of Long Island, blew 0.147 at the scene, but that reading fell to 0.067 - below the legal intoxication limit of 0.08 - during a generally more reliable followup test at a police station.

Police say the rise in armored cars among celebrities is due in large part to a string of beefs in the rap world. "The car was outfitted for war or to protect [President] Bush," a police source said after Rhymes was charged yesterday with driving while intoxicated and driving while impaired. "He's driving around a safe city like it's the red zone in Iraq."

Unique Autosport bought the black Yukon for about $60,000 and added Pirelli bullet-resistant tires. The double-paned windows are 2 inches thick and also bulletproof. Workers added steel and Kevlar, the material used in bulletproof vests, to fortify the body of the SUV.

The luxury add-ons include two televisions in headrests, two 20-inch drop-down televisions, a satellite radio and TV package, and a stereo system that booms at 1,000 watts. The final price tag was $235,000, but Rhymes got a discount of $10,000.

"I think it's only prudent," said Scott Leemon, Rhymes' attorney. "I tell all my entertainment customers to have security with them all the time and to drive a secured vehicle."

Rhymes already was facing other raps accusing him of beating down his former driver and smacking around a fan who spat on his Maybach. A trial was scheduled to begin on the assault charges Tuesday.

Cops long have wanted to question Rhymes in the murder of his bodyguard, Israel Ramirez, who was shot to death in February 2006 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, during a video shoot for the remix of his hit "Touch It."

Investigators on the murder case came to the Midtown North Precinct as Rhymes was being processed. Police wouldn't say whether they questioned Rhymes in the killing, and his attorney declined to comment.
