Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons is set to team up with non-profit organization Literate Nation Atlanta in an effort to inspire youth to continue and complete their high school education.
The organization, whose mission is to "motivate teens to 'get into' high school and prepare for life," will produce three local student events in the Atlanta area which will feature Simmons. The group also holds seminars for youth, teaching students about business, employment and pathways to success. As part of the events, students from six local area high schools will receive a free copy of Simmons' inspirational new book, Do You! Northsprings, Westlake, Carver, Therrell, Southside and Washington high schools will all participate. "Many of the students failing or dropping out live in an environment that has not sold them on the inviolate interconnection between higher education and success in America. This may be due to influences from their family, socio-economic situation or social group," said Hinton Dillard, Chairman and Founder, Literate Nation. "We, the non-profit and business community, must deliver to the students in these challenged high schools the same advantages students in Atlanta's private schools enjoy or this unbearable track record will continue." As previously reported by SOHH, Simmons and his Hip Hop Action Summit Network recently urged those in the recording industry as well as various media outlets to censor potentially racist or misogynistic language from their content. Simmons and the HSAN also called for the formation of a Coalition on Broadcast Standards that would consist of leading executives from music, radio and television. Source-sohh
