04/11/07 - Ciara Concert a Financial Disaster

Apparently a sum of $50,000 has been wasted on recording artist Ciara's March 24 concert at the Mitchell Center in Alabama. The concert, which was meant as a fundraiser for United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile, achieved low attendance and instead caused the Mobile County Commission and Mobile County taxpayers to lose money.

On March 12, the Mobile County Commission voted 3-0 to give $50,000 to United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile. They are now being held accountable for the large amount of money.

"I think we would've been better giving the money to the charity and helping children," said Mobile Commissioner Steve Nodine. "If you think for a second, I would've voted for $50,000 for the Ciara concert, your full of yourself," said Nodine.

In a contract signed by Commissioner Juan Chastang and the President of UCP Glenn Harger, Mobile County agreed to give $50,000 to the nonprofit group for general funding purposes. Although there was no mention of a benefit concert (held at the Mitchell Center) in the contract, pop-singer Ciara did perform in concert.

Harger says the nonprofit group had only the best of intentions and had no idea a commissioner had questions about the donation.
