04/10/07 - Fantasia Gives "Color Purple" $6 Million Facelift

Former "American Idol" winner Fantasia is set to make her Broadway debut in "The Color Purple" tonight (April 10).

The R&B chanteuse steps onstage to play the lead role of Celie, in the Oprah Winfrey-produced stage adaptation of Alice Walker's prize-winning novel The Color Purple. Since February 22, when it was announced that Fantasia would be starring in the show, over $6 million in advance tickets have been sold.

According to the New York Daily News, a little propwork helped lure Fantasia to the show. When she accepted an invitation to a business dinner on January 23 with show producer Scott Sanders, he hoped to reel her in with the promise of putting her name in lights, so Sanders called in a special favor from an ad agency to bring along to dinner at Bar Americain.

"I brought a mock-up of the front of the [theater] with Fantasia's name on it," Sanders, told the Daily News. "By the end of dinner, that was it."

Until recently Fantasia has been a stranger to Broadway.

"It's such a blessing," Fantasia told the Daily News . "I'd never even been to a Broadway show. It's exciting to think that people who've never been will come to see the show."

In related news, Fantasia is now speaking up about the illiteracy rumors that have followed her since early in her career. Fantasia recently told the New York Post that those claims were blown out of proportion.

"I dropped out of school in the ninth grade, and when I said I had trouble reading, they took it that I couldn't read at all," Fantasia told the Post. "I knew the basics, but some words that were unfamiliar, I couldn't figure them out."

Fantasia has since put those struggles behind her, telling the paper "I'm da bomb now, babe!"
