03/12/07 - Crime Mob Talks Sophomore CD,"We're Not Just Kids, We Have Talent"

Crime Mob is just one week away from the release of their sophomore album Hated On Mostly, the follow up to their self titled debut. In this SOHH exclusive, Diamond, Princess and Cyco Black give their fans the inside story on the new album, how the group got their start and why they can't be stopped.

Despite their sinister name, Crime Mob has built a solid reputation for upbeat, energetic music like the smash hit "Knuck if You Buck" and their current single "Rock Yo Hips." [Watch Video] The name actually pre-dates the group - which consists of rappers Diamond, 18, Princess, 19, Cyco Black, 20, M.I.G., 19, and 21-year-old producer Lil' Jay. Since their formation during junior high, the squad has put their all into turning that negative connotation around.

"In the past some things went on with the boys, just being hardheaded, from the age of 9 to 15, that's when you think you know everything and you hot headed. The boys got into a little trouble, they had a little clique. The clique the boys came up with was Crime Mob. They would rap in the gym at City Borough Middle School and compete against all the different rap groups. But before they decided to take this and really run with it, they was just being teenagers, getting into things you shouldn't get into," Diamond explained to SOHH.

"When me and Princess came in the group we really wanted to just do this. We wanted to be legit," Diamond continued. "So we made the Crime Mob mean the 'Crunkest Regime in Music Entertaintment' - and 'Mob' 'cuz we a mob, a clique, a family."

Though they may still be young (they were in high school when the first album was released) Crime Mob has stepped up their game significantly since the release of their first album. Much of the production on Hated On Mostly was provided by Lil' Jay and M.I.G. with the rest of the group writing hooks as well as their verses.

"I'm proud that we coming out with another album. We been on the grind for two years straight doing shows, we getting a good response, I'm so happy about that," Cyco Black said.

With their single "Rock Yo Hips" featuring Lil' Scrappy already doing well, Crime Mob is hoping to silence critics with Hated On Mostly.

"The first time around it was a lot of underestimation going on -- with our peers as well as other people saying we were too young and we weren't real lyricists, but at the end of the day you have to understand it's all entertainment and we're catering to a specific crowd," Princess explained. "This time around we have something everyone can listen to, our lyrics are more in depth, our beats are better. We're not just kids that have a record deal, we actually have talent."

Hated On Mostly lands in stores on March 20 via Warner Bros./BME Recordings.
