03/12/07 - Hip Hop Mogul Suge Knight Still Wants Death Row Records

Recent articles on hip hop entrepreneur Marion ‘Suge’ Knight wanting to leave his legendary west coast Death Row Records behind him were not 100-percent accurate.

The New York Post Page 6 interview with the hip hop legend implied that he (Suge) was leaving the label behind him.

In speaking to Jonathan Wolfson, PR representative for the hip hop mogul Suge Knight, ThugLifeArmy.com was told “Suge is trying to file a Chapter 7 in order to liquidate his publishing. He's fine with Death Row being restructured through a Chapter 11. It's his publishing ownership that he wants to liquidate in order to pay off Death Row's debts and move on with his life.”

It seems that Death Row Records is alive and still is and will be under the leadership of one of the legendary figures in hip hop – Mr. Marion ‘Suge’ Knight.

So instead of this being a close of a chapter of hip hop history, this could be the beginning of a New Chapter for Marion ‘Suge’ Knight and Death Row Records.

Marion ‘Suge’ Knight, who built one of the biggest black owned record labels since Motown is responsible for many of the careers of past hip hop and rap artist.

Once the most profitable and famous label in hip hop, rap and gangsta rap; Death Row Records has seen a decline in the past 10 years. Once the home of super hip hop icon Tupac Shakur (2Pac), Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Lisa Left Eye, Daz Dillinger, Kurupt, Crooked I, Eastwood, and a host of other hip hop, rap and R&B talent; Death Row Records is a part of Hip Hop History and no one can take that from Death Row Records or its founder Marion ‘Suge’ Knight.

Hopefully Marion ‘Suge’ Knight can put this all behind him and once again make hip hop history with his famous Death Row Records.

1991: Death Row Records is born.

1992: Dr. Dre records their 1st track "Deep Cover" and introduces the world to Snoop Doggy Dogg. Later that year Dr. Dre drops his debut solo "The Chronic" and introduces the world to Warren G., Nate Dogg, Kurupt and Dat Nigga Daz AKA Tha Dogg Pound, Lady Of Rage and RBX.

1993: The Chronic goes triple platinum. The Lady of Rage was originally set to release her debut after Dre but instead released Snoop Doggy Dogg's Doggystyle later that year and sold 802,858 copies the 1st week.

1994: Doggystyle quickly outsells The Chronic with 4 million sold and becomes the biggest name in hip hop.(According to Soundscan, Doggystyle sold 6 million as of December 2006). Death Row releases Above The Rim soundtrack and it quickly sells 2 million copies with the help of the hit singles "Regulate" (Warren G. ft. Nate Dogg) and "Afro Puffs" (Lady Of Rage). Later that year Snoop releases a mini movie Murder Was The Case accompanied with a soundtrack that also sold 2 million copies.
DJ Quik becomes affiliated with Death Row (be never actually signed). Death Row becomes the biggest and most famous black owned record label since Motown.

1995: Fed up with his debut constantly delayed by Dre and Suge, RBX leaves Death Row and releases his solo The RBX-Files which contained the diss track "AWOL" (aimed at Death Row but mainly at Dr. Dre) Later that year Death Row releases Tha Dogg Pound's debut Dogg Food. Even though the album sold 2 million copies, it failed to lived up to the success of The Chronic and Doggystyle. Suge bails 2Pac outta prison on a $1.4 million appeal bond in exchange for a 3 album deal. In December 1995, 2Pac's first Death Row single "California Love" was released.

1996: 2Pac's Death Row debut All Eyez On Me iz released. The album was qualified for platinum status within only 4 hours after it's release. The album went on to be certified diamond. As a result of Pac's presence and album sales, Snoop was no longer Death Row's biggest star. Pac releases the single "How Do U Want It" which contained a diss track on the B-side entitled "Hit 'Em Up" which takes shots Notorious B.I.G., Lil' Kim, Junior Mafia, Mobb Deep and Chino XL and sparks the infamous East Coast/West Coast rivalry. Shortly after, Dr. Dre leaves Death Row on the grounds that Suge was financially dishonest, corrupt and outta control. *with their in house producer gone, Death Row sees a decline in royalty and starts a slow death*. Later that year 2Pac shot in Las Vegas and died 7 days later. Suge goes to prison. *And now Death Row is even closer to death* Death Row releases Makaveli: The Don Killuminati 7 Day Theory which went to sell 4 million copies. Snoop Doggy Dogg releases The Doggfather without any production from Dr. Dre. The album sold 2 million copies but could not live up to the success of Doggystyle. Also released was the platinum selling Death Row's Greatest Hits.
