02/27/07 - Film To Expose MTV, BET & VH1

A new film takes aim at all the negative that makes up media conglomerate Viacom.

Turn Off Channel Zero, a collaborative effort from various activists artists, media personalities and actors takes a hard look at MTV, BET (often the subject of criticism at DX) and VH1.

One of Hip Hop’s most outspoken and controversial activists/artists, Public Enemy’s Professor Griff makes an appearance in the film.

Zero differs from other documentaries of its kind by also taking a look at the people behind the scenes, including CBS and Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone (if you’re not up on him, hit up Google).

Particular attention is given to VH1’s popular reality show, Flava of Love and the depictions of Black men and women on the show. “The Flavor of Love is showing the whole world who they think we are,” says one of the film’s interviewees.

“They’re [Viacom’s] using our culture to destroy us,” says another

Channel Zero also shows the other side of the coin, interviewing Black men and women who see nothing wrong with the images on today’s TV screens, dubbing them little more than “entertainment.”

"From here on out, we are going to control our own images," says Professor Griff.

Screenings of the one hour, fourteen minute documentary will be held in various cities. For more information and to view a short trailer, check out .
