02/15/07 - Fabolous On Jay-Z, New Album & More (pushed back)

On the heels of releasing his fourth album From Nothin' To Somethin', Fabolous chopped it up with SOHH about his new record, last years shooting, and his relationship with label head Jay-Z.

After making his switch to the legendary hip-hop label Def Jam from Atlantic Records, Fab is confident that his new record is his best effort to date.

"I wanted to keep the same diversity and be versatile but I wanted to still evolve a little bit," says Fab about the making of the album. "It's hard to evolve in hip-hop because hip-hop wants you to stay 19 forever and you can't do that. That's what happened to Nas. People wanted him to stay in that Illmatic mode forever."

Fab also believes he has stepped up his pen game. "I think people will notice how much I put into the rhymes," Fab told SOHH. "It's certain people that you can almost tell they just said whatever was the first thing to come to their heads. I'm going to stick to what I do and that's the challenge. I'm not going to change because some people think the fans have changed," explains Fab. "I don't think I've really gotten that recognition overall but I'll just keep doing it until I beat down the door and people accept it."

The album, which features appearances from the likes of Young Jeezy and Ne-Yo and beats by Timbaland, Steve Morales, and Jazze Pha, is Fab's first for Def Jam president Jay-Z. And while some have criticized Jigga's short tenure as label head, Fab thinks differently.

"It's been a good thing," he says of having Hov as a boss. "I haven't looked at Jay as anything but a president when it comes to my project, not really as Jay-Z the artist. I think that's where people go wrong... I just look at him the same way I would any other executive at any other label and I think he has the same attitude."

Fab also touched on the aftermath of being shot earlier last year. The rapper was hit in the leg on October 17 after an altercation while leaving Diddy's "Justin's" restaurant.

"It didn't affect my career because my music has never thrived off of me trying to be hard or tough. But personally, I had to make some changes," he said. "I had to change and switch certain people I would be around and how I moved. I'm still not out here wearing no bullet-proof vests or nothing. But I just look at it as a speed bump on my road to success."

The rapper says that he's finalizing the video arrangements for "Diamonds," the album's first single, featuring Young Jeezy, which will shoot next week. With personal adversity behind him, Fabolous is eager to show fans that he is ready to jump back in the game feet first.

"I want people to know that I can consistently make good music. I still have the passion for it. I don't think they forgot, but I want them to know.

Fabolous' From Nothin' To Somethin' hits shelves on April 17.

I thought his first single was the joint produced by timaland featuring ne-yo,in my personal opinion I think he should've went with a different single then that diamonds joint. Maybe it will grow on me.
