More than 12 years have passed since Eazy-E discovered Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and unleashed a new form of hip-hop — and music — on pop culture.
Along the way, between writing the Grammy-winning tribute song Tha Crossroads, selling nearly 30 million records and recording a star-studded potential comeback album due later this year, the Cleveland hip-hop crew got a call from Sean "Diddy" Combs. It was the late ’90s, and Combs’ star artist, the Notorious B.I.G., had met the group at a party in New York and wanted it on his next album, founding member Layzie Bone recalled. Bone Thugs headed to California to contribute to one of Biggie’s last works, Notorious Thugs. And although the group recorded the song in Los Angeles, Layzie can’t remember many details from the sessions. "A lot of Hennessy and heavy smoking in them days," he said by way of explanation. It has been five years since the group released a major-label record, but Bone Thugs has a clear path mapped out for the future. In late March, the group plans to release a new compact disc — Strength and Loyalty — featuring a cast of heavyweight guest stars. "We believe it’s going to be the biggest album to date," Layzie said from his home in Atlanta. Don’t scoff. Bone Thugs never blew its credibility, keeping a loyal fan base built on its melodic but gritty early albums. One member, Krayzie Bone, is up for two Grammys this year for his appearance on Chamillionaire’s summer anthem Ridin’. Most important, the group is signed to Interscope Records, a juggernaut among hip-hop labels and the home of Dr. Dre. (Bone Thugs has a joint deal with the company through producer Swizz Beats’ Full Surface label.) Though known for their collaborations with now-deceased rap luminaries — Biggie, 2Pac and Eazy-E — Bone Thugs never released an album with as many star collaborations as the upcoming disc, Layzie said. Jermaine Dupri produced a song featuring Mariah Carey, which could be an early single, while other tracks feature The Game and Petey Pablo. According to publicists at Interscope, Dr. Dre isn’t producing any of the new songs. But Layzie said Kanye West, Will.i.am (a member of the Black Eyed Peas) and reigning R &B champ Akon all contributed tracks. Meanwhile, Bone Thugs tours seven to eight months a year. In concert, Layzie said, the group performs oldies such as Tha Crossroads and 1st of Tha Month, as well as songs from the new album and everything in between. Bone Thugs has included as many as five members but now performs as a trio. One member, Bizzy Bone, is out of the group, while another, Flesh-N-Bone, is locked up. Still, Layzie said, all the members are on good terms. "Everybody’s still cool," he said. "You know, we’re just grown men, and we got different business endeavors that we tend to, but we all keep it true to Bone Thugs-NHarmony." Formed in the early 1990s, the group featured a trademark sound that is a harmonic, rapid-fire combination of rapping and singing. The sound was like nothing else in music when E. 1999 Eternal hit No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart in 1995. Layzie said the members cultivated the style growing up together in Cleveland. Between 1994 and 2000, Bone Thugs released four platinum or multiplatinum albums. The group eventually left Eazy-E’s Ruthless Records. Then Interscope came calling, setting the stage for another potential breakthrough year and signaling that the group’s biggest hits aren’t necessarily all in the past. "They said . . . (E. 1999 Eternal) was the classic," Layzie said. "But you know, that was 10 years ago, and I think we’re going to top that — most definitely." SOURCE:

bone can make a tight track with dre, but they dont need him to make a tight album. they can hold their own... but i do hope the collab does go down for real one day sooner rather than later.

Few and I mean VERY few artists were able to top their own classic. But Bone top E.1999 Eternal? Maaan, that'z a tall order. There wasn't a soft song on there except "Tha Crossroads" Remix. I could let that CD ride wit'out skippin a track. A 6x Platinum album with an almost Triple Platinum single. I love Bone but, I doubt they can pull that off. But I believe they will see Platinum sales again.

They would need all 5 of them to top E. 1999 and that's just not gonna happen. But I still look forward to their new album.

True...But I think they just need to be at least 4 again. When Flesh N Bone touch down next year, they'll be awright. Maybe then, Bizzy will be back in the picture.
