01/19/07 - Rapper Sentenced To 50 Years For Killing His Promoter

An aspiring California rapper who shot and killed his promoter who expressed doubt in his talent, was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for first-degree murder today (January 19).

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, Kanyva (born Juston Micheal Potts), shot Shani Renee Holloway, 31, twice in the back of the head at point-blank range in June 2004, as she sat in a car with her boyfriend on the 3000 block of Peppermill Circle in Pittsburg, CA.

Investigators revealed that three months before her slaying, Holloway had agreed in a "loose business agreement" to promote Potts' career, but he became resentful because she was negative about his prospects.

On the day of murder, Holloway and her boyfriend gave Potts a ride to a Pittsburg home, where he got out of the car, went over to a sport utility vehicle that had pulled up nearby, then returned with a handgun and shot her.

Potts, 21, who waived a jury trial, had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but the judge concluded that he was sane.
