01/05/07 - 50 Cent New Movie Home Of The Brave Is In Theaters Now!-01/05/07

Home of the Brave (2006) 4 STARS OUT OF 5

Irwin Winkler's Home of the Brave is a contemporary updating of The Best Years of Our Lives that substitutes returning Iraq War veterans for returning WWII soldiers. Other than that, it's a fairly familiar entry in the kind of earnest "scarred soldiers returning home" subgenre that Best Years pioneered, a genre that includes films like The Deer Hunter, Born on the Fourth of July, and Coming Home. Home of the Brave doesn't have much new to offer aside from the specificity of a new war, but its empathy for its characters and a bunch of knockout performances make it worth a look.
The movie follows four soldiers whose lives are changed forever by a brutal ambush in Iraq. Vanessa Price (Jessica Biel) is a mother and P.E. teacher who returns to the U.S. without a hand after her truck is blown up; Tommy Yates (Brian Presley) is haunted by the death of his best friend; Jamal Aiken (Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson) accidentally kills an innocent civilian; and medic Will Marsh (Samuel L. Jackson) is plagued by guilt over the lives he failed to save. When these four veterans return home to Spokane, Washington, they each have severe problems adjusting to civilian life, and their emotional and physical wounds threaten to destroy their relationships with others.

Again, The Best Years of Our Lives is clearly the template here, but Winkler and screenwriter Mark Friedman incorporate one key change that makes their film more similar to Vietnam pictures like Born and Deer Hunter: They show the battle that alters the course of their heroes' lives. Though the combat sequence lacks the immediacy of something like Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers (a far better film about the trauma of surviving a battle in which one's friends have perished), it's still hypnotic and frightening enough to have a real effect on the later scenes set in Spokane. When Marsh hosts a mundane neighborhood barbeque, or Yates and Price meet at a crummy multiplex where Yates works, the contrast with the Iraq material is jarring and gives the viewer a real sense of how out of place these veterans feel—Winkler and cinematographer Tony Pierce-Roberts manage to make the architecture and landscapes that define suburban America look like outer space. When one of the characters makes the decision to return to active duty, it almost seems logical given the alien surroundings in which he finds himself.

It's a bit of a shame, then, that Winkler feels the need to bludgeon the audience with sloppily inserted flashbacks to underline every emotion the characters are feeling. When Price has trouble picking up a soccer ball with her prosthetic hand, Winkler can't resist cutting to a shot of her playing basketball at the beginning of the film—as though we didn't get the point that she's lost something. He does this time and time again, interrupting key emotional moments with material that isn't needed, and which in fact has the opposite of the intended effect. Chopping up the actors' close-ups with redundant flashbacks makes their pain less moving, not more.

Luckily for Winkler, his actors are so good they save him from his own overly obvious technique. All four of the leads are excellent in different ways; in the showiest role, Curtis Jackson has a violent force that's both sad and chilling, while Brian Presley gives a more understated but equally affecting performance. Best of all is Jessica Biel, who obliterates her image as Esquire's "Sexiest Woman Alive" with a stunningly complex turn as a woman who loses not only her hand but her marriage and her sense of self as a result of her tour in Iraq. Hers is the most compelling of the four stories, and when she interacts with the other leads—as in a nicely awkward exchange with Samuel L. Jackson at his office—she makes them rise to her level.

As an ensemble story Home of the Brave has a lot of shortcomings. Some subplots, such as a storyline following Marsh and his teenage son, are far too tidily resolved, while others, like a relationship between Aiken and his ex-girlfriend, seem to be missing key scenes. Yet there are many moving and truthful moments here, particularly in the Vanessa Price story. While the filmmakers give us the expected Born on the Fourth of July-esque scenes in which Price rages against her circumstances, they also provide a lot of quieter moments between her, her son, and her potential boyfriend (played to perfection by Once and Again's Jeffrey Nordling) that are as powerful in their own way as the ambush sequence. Winkler clearly loves these characters, and if he sometimes pushes too hard in his effort to make the audience share his affection it's forgivable under the circumstances.

or maybe someone who has read an interview that says that 50 has a smaller role. i think they said that they actually wrote a character in for him after the story was already written.

i dunno this movie kinda sucked. 50 wasnt even in it that much. just the beginning and a couple scenes after it. Can't really judge his acting that much cuz he didnt really do a whole lot. Pretty boring too. Just my opinion.
