Young Buck - Product Of The South
Published: Monday - March 17, 2008 |

As you already know you heard the rumors of Young Buck leaving G-Unit. Whatever the case maybe one main point that Young Buck expressed is the relationship with him and 50 Cent is not strong as it used to be. Now if you want too what’s really good you can now hear from the man himself and yes he has some things to say that’s worth reading. I guess it goes back to the situation of when you feel your label is not doing they job the green light hits and tells you it’s time to move on. Young Buck is now taking his initiative in trying to take Cashville Records up to the next level. Getting deeper inside, how does he really feel about Jimmy Iovine, Interscope, and G-Unit? Not only that he strongly admits he never received a royalty check as long as he’s been signed with G-Unit and why he has the most respect for Scarface.

When an artist drops an album that does pretty good sometimes they take some time off. On your behalf what’s the toughest thing to get right back on the grind to do it again?

It’s by not taking no time off my n*gga, I ain’t take a day off of this shit. When you don’t see me in the public eye don’t mean Buck is not working. 24 hours a day, seven days a week I’m getting it in some kind of way dealing with this music. My whole thing is being prepared whenever it’s ya time. I came in the game with a crew and wasn’t able to release an album like I can with my own label. I always had to wait in line, wait till Banks drop, wait till Yayo drop. Two years to wait for the solo to come out is a long time, but I’ve done that. This last project I actually had the chance to deal with Jimmy Iovine a little more than I ever have in my career, but it’s stress for me dealing with them people over there. Expressing that part of things my relationship is as strong as 50 Cent allows it to be at Interscope. If it don’t work I look at it as if it’s all my fault, I don’t even put the blame on nobody. If the shit don’t work it’s Buck’s fault, I take the licking and keep on moving you know.

Well like they say you live and you learn!

True!

Personally how do you feel about Jimmy Iovine with the business he does at Interscope?

I think he’s a great dude straight up and down man. He’s a humble dude and at the end of the day I think he’s a man that’s strictly about business. If your productive he will and assist with you. He’s got a big roster so if your not productive he moves on you know. I realized that’s only business and a way to stay on top of success. I respect Jimmy Iovine to the upmost, but I think sometimes you got a blessing in disguise. I think he needs to pay a little bit more attention to Young Buck I would say that much. Give me a little more focus as far as his artist, give me the budget that sold those millions of records if you want to see the feedback. It’s like that with me in the streets, I feel like the streets feel I don’t get what I deserve from Interscope or G-Unit. At the end of the day I don’t feed off of what the streets feel, but I am aware of the way they feel my n*gga.

"Buck The World" was a hot album, but what was your favorite between "Buck The World" and "Straight Outta Cashville"?

With "Straight Outta Cashville" I feel as though that album pretty much introduced me. I compare that album to "Straight Outta Compton". If you look at what N.W.A. did with that album they showed who they was, where they was from, and what the fuck they was about. That’s what I did with "Straight Outta Cashville" and with "Buck The World" it was just about me growing up. Like I said you only get older as human beings and the older I get the wiser I become. With that album it was about me trying different things and I’m not scared to try different shit. I think the fans look for the artists to re-invent themselves every time, they don’t want to pay to see the same thing. I try to do that with the music as well with myself. At the most part I don’t even consider this "Buck The World" album as a lost myself, because I’m doing shows. I got shows booked every fuckin day, if you wanna get me in your fuckin city holla at Mike Lighty at Violator Management nigga and I’m there. My shit don’t stop my dude, I’ve been touring ever since "Straight Outta Cashville", I never came off the road n*gga. My first album went platinum, my second album went damn near gold so I’m not mad at all. I understand it’s not rap, me, or the artists, the economy a lot of times is dealing with this situation. The economy been dealing with a lot of things itself with a motherfucker like Bush in office. Gas prices is fucked up, it damn near cost a hundred dollars to get a full tank of gas. Motherfuckers ain’t got that twenty dollars to buy a CD no more. Then you got your Internet, n*ggas is really feeling like they working a job, they feel like they working a 9-5 because they wake up and download your shit from 9-5 [laughs]. They really feel like they punching in a clock [laughs]. The CD’s ain’t doing good, but I think the game always gonna succeed. Rap always succeed period, when the bullshit comes in you just have to work around it, hey man I’m good.

Speaking on you doing shows all the time, how much you can get on a good night?

Shit, man it depends on the venue, the size of the venue, and all that good stuff. If you want to find out holla at Mike Lighty at Violator and we can work it out [laughs].

[Laughs] So the show money is good right?

It’s been paying my bills, it’s been keeping me alive out here. A lot of times a lot of artists don’t recoup off of albums so a lot of times they never get to see the backend from that project. I’m the only artist on G-Unit that ever recouped off of an album meaning I went off on this "Buck The World" project not owing Interscope and G-Unit shit, I can say that much. I’m still waiting on a royalty check period, I never seen a royalty check since I’ve been signed with G-Unit. So hell yeah I’ll tell you one damn thing the show money is that good. I’ve never in my career cashed a royalty check, how you like that? Put that one in big black letters n*gga!

Hey man let it all out, this is the place to do it!

Yeah!

When I listen to your music I see you like to talk a lot about your personal life. Can you tell the fans out there why that is important to you?

Because I feel like the people love artists the most who do that. The ones that I loved the most always focused on real life issues. That’s how we know 50 been shot nine times, that’s how we know Tupac’s mother was a Black Panther, and everything else because it’s real. When your life is that real why not speak on it? My life is really that real, I just learned that the ones we love the most and last the longest are the ones that keep it the realest, the ones that speak the truth. Scarface, Tupac, Scarface is my biggest mentor and one of my biggest homeboys in this game. If it wasn’t for him giving me heads up on a lot of shit I’ve would’ve been fucked up a lot of these rap n*ggas man.

From what I heard they say Scarface got a lot of respect in the game.

You do know that. I mean I look at Scarface as the king of the South. He represented the South with the up most respect as well as Pimp C and Bun B. I look at them as real true kings of the South man. When it comes to the south you can’t never say nothing without saying Scarface and UGK. We take our hats off to them n*ggas.

With you being a businessman and about to get stuff popping off with Cashville, how you feel about the downloading working with your artists in terms of it affecting it?

At the end of the day I’m a make it work for me man. The mixtape is what’s really keeping my system of music out there and that’s pretty much done through the downloading thing. The bottom line is that when you make classic records as good as Young Buck’s a motherfucker don’t want no burned CD. Even if they do get that burned CD a motherfucker can’t wait to get the real one. The motherfuckers that buy burned CD’s can’t wait to go to the store and buy the album. I got a relationship with the fans and the streets period, I fall in that bracket. You may go get a Jay-Z burned CD just because you want to hear it, but when it hits that shelf you gonna go buy it right? It’s the same way with Eminem, Dr. Dre, Tupac, etc. I worked myself in that lane by keeping shit real with my people.

Talk about the love you have in Cashville alone?

They identify with me the most, because the shit I’m talking about they get right behind me and say "Hell Yeah" [laughs]. For me man my city know what it is, I’m one of those dudes that’s actually out here. I’m not an artist that’s successful that you don’t see. I’m just a hood n*gga man, I understand what I am, where I was raised, and where I come from. I understand where I want to go and where I’m going.

To wrap this up where do you see the music business five years from now and how does Young Buck fit into that?

I definitely see the music business getting better as far as sales goes, I think that’s gonna change real soon. Five years from now I just hope and pray I have success with my label, I hope I’ll still be able to do music with 50 Cent and G-Unit. I don’t know, but I hope it will be. At the end of the day I’m hoping success for my movies, clothing line, I’m looking for success well around the board as a businessman and artist.
