Default 03/03/08 - DJ Whoo Kid: The Mixtape Mogul

03/03/08 - DJ Whoo Kid: The Mixtape Mogul

50 Cent, G-Unit, T-Pain, and Chamillionaire -- these are just a few of the artists that DJ Whoo Kid has aided in their initial introduction unto the world. Working with these artists has allowed him to see hip-hop from every angle. From the exciting point when artists like Run DMC were first bringing hip-hop to mainstream to the more dangerous side of hip-hop where individuals can get shanked by a rapper's crew. They say the game is addictive, so when Who Kidd claims he is retiring and moving to Thailand, it almost sounds unbelievable. How can one of the mixtape game give's giants give up the game? We find out...

BallerStatus.com: What is your criteria when it comes to who you are going to work with on a mixtape?

DJ Whoo Kid: I give a lot a people a shot, but the music has to be on point. I study the artist's background, and their crew. That depends on if I want to be a part of it. If I don't want to be a part of it, then it's a paying transaction and I wish them all the luck. A lot of people use me to get their name out there.

BallerStatus.com: A lot of people wouldn't even think that you would do that much work as far as researching the artist.

DJ Whoo Kid: It depends on how exclusive they are. Creatively, are they separated from other artists? When I first heard T-Pain, he had a voice that sounded like a robot and sh--. When I first played his record on my radio show, I knew he would blow up. Chamillionaire, he did his own work, selling his sh-- out the trunk independently. He had already sold 100,000. He needed an East Coast background. That's what I provided for him.

BallerStatus.com: How did you get your name?

DJ Whoo Kid: Every time my mother would take a sh--, my father would be like "Whoo wee!" I just took that from my father. Every time someone would get robbed or beat up, I would be like "Whoo wee!" Kids in highschool called me Whoo Kidd. When I began to DJ, I just called myself Whoo Kid.

BallerStatus.com: What is this I hear about you retiring in two years?

DJ Whoo Kid: Yeah I'm out of here. I can't take it anymore.

BallerStatus.com: What do you mean?

DJ Whoo Kid: It's a lot of work. I can't do it. I'm just going to concentrate on TV, radio and marketing.

BallerStatus.com: So you are not doing any more mixtapes?

DJ Whoo Kid: I'm out. I'm moving to Thailand. I already got everything planned. I got a house in Hawaii and I'm moving to Thailand. I have done a lot of crazy things in my life, messing with 50 and Eminem.

BallerStatus.com: You are a fairly young dude still. Do you think you can truly retire?

DJ Whoo Kid: Yeah. Hip-hop is a violent ruthless business. When you're not popping, they have ways of deading you. I just want to be the one to dead my career.

BallerStatus.com: You don't want someone else to have that power to decide that your sh-- is over?

DJ Whoo Kid: Yeah, I'm very tired. I'm not trying to be an old DJ wearing a chain with a tight shirt.

BallerStatus.com: Okay, how did you come to become the DJ for 50?

DJ Whoo Kid: I have known 50 for a minute. I use to live near Clue's apartment. The block I lived on was a very drug dealerish block. So, I used to see Biggie, Pac, Nas -- they used to hang with this dude called Tall Stretch. They would come by for beats. 50 Cent use to be the chubby 50 and used to beat everybody up. Knowing him before they popped off, even Ja Rule used to be there. I grew up seeing all the rappers like Run DMC. Once I got into this with my cousin... the last DJ 50 messed with had got stabbed up or something I don't know. Blood was everywhere and he quit. It came to a point when they didn't trust anyone. I just came in and helped them out. Since we did their first mixtape, it's been a roller coaster ride.

BallerStatus.com: Let's talk about some of your business ventures. Is it true that you have a watch line coming out?

DJ Whoo Kid: Not true. I have a deal where they are using me to market them in Barneys and other expensive stores. I'm going to use my resources to move them. It's only for the elite that I deal with all the time.

BallerStatus.com: Well, must be nice. (laughs) What about the Shadyville DJ Coalition? Are you still doing that?

DJ Whoo Kid: Like if Snoop Dogg wants more of a buzz, we promote them. We are trying to market artists with our own little marketing strategies. It's like any other DJ crew.

BallerStatus.com: You are still doing the Sirius Radio show on Sat?

DJ Whoo Kid: I program direct that all day and then I am the host and the DJ. I mainly make it an all-star event with stars and rappers coming on. It's a ten hour show.

BallerStatus.com: Ten hours from what time on?

DJ Whoo Kid: From 10 a.m. to 8 pm. I think it's longer than ten hours.

BallerStatus.com: How do you manage to balance all of these things?

DJ Whoo Kid: I still don't know. I have a magazine also; I had a meeting for that the other day.

BallerStatus.com: I heard about the magazine. How do you do all of these things? Do you have children? Do you have a personal life?

DJ Whoo Kid: Yeah I have kids. I actually have a daughter who had basketball practice before I went to the meeting. So, it's like basketball practice, meeting, 50 Cent mixtape, went to graphic designer for cover for CD. Then I have five shows this weekend. Then I have a 50 concert.

BallerStatus.com: How do you balance all of this?

DJ Whoo Kid: I don't even know. I'm still trying to figure it out. It's the hardest when I go away for months.

BallerStatus.com: Tell me about the magazine.

DJ Whoo Kid: The magazine is called POW. The first issue already came out. The second issue is coming with 50 on the cover and Snoop on the other side. It's an entertainment magazine. It shows how hip-hop affects all forms of entertainment. I interviewed Robert Dinero. He doesn't care about hip-hop, but he does like the way we hook up our cars. It influences all people.

He's out there grinding hard. It'll be interesting to see if he does a mixtape album. He's got a strong enough body of work and enough artists have come to him for a buzz. If he do I hope he doesn't just slap the songs together like Drama did.
