Default 10/31/07 - Project Pat - From Ashy To Classy

10/31/07 - Project Pat - From Ashy To Classy

One of the most successful Hip-Hop groups in recent memory has to be none other than Three 6 Mafia. Snagging an Oscar, and landing your own television show on MTV will have that kind of effect on you. It seems that lady luck has been on their side recently, and now one of their affiliates is getting his good-luck rub on.

Project Pat (who happens to be the brother of Three Six Mafia member Juicy J) is getting his time to shine these days.

After being released from a four-year prison sentence, Pat came home to Memphis, Tennessee back in 2005.

His timing couldn’t have been any better because that following year his brother’s group won an Oscar for best original song, and also became the first Hip-Hop act to ever perform at the ceremony. Now, as he sets forth to release his album, Walkin’ Bank Roll, he’s out to prove that this is far from beginners luck.

When did you officially first get into music?

I was always into music, but I was incarcerated from 1994-96, and I got out in ’97. Like I put out an underground album back in 1993, and from there I just hooked up with [DJ] Paul and Juicy [J], that’s my brother. And it’s on been on ever since.

Did you create this album with a different approach? Or did you stay in the same lane as your other projects?

Down South man, we’re stuck in our ways. [Laughs] We ain’t changing nothing. That’s just how we do down here. A lot of people say that down South rap is “bubblegum” stuff. But we’re down here getting $50,000.00 a show, so someone needs to be down here chewing a whole pack of Hubba-Bubba! [Laughing] We’re getting money down here man, and its REAL cash money. So to have money like that, and for it to be legal is a blessing, know what I’m saying. So you can’t hate on that. So all those people talking about how Hip-Hop is dead doesn’t know sh*t, because it’s alive in my world.

How much do you think appearing on Adventures In Hollyhood helped your movement?

Well, being on television always helps you out a little bit. After those MTV awards they wanted to do something with us, and they wanted to sign us to a television show. But now we’re actually about to start shooting a movie about Adventures In Hollyhood.

During your most recent incarceration, what was your mindset? Were you still writing music?

Yeah, I was still writing. I did a lot of writing in a lot of books. I wrote so many songs, that I can’t remember all of them. But I was in there writing a lot of verses and hooks, and all of that. And I still got them. So now whenever I’m stuck, and I need a verse here or a verse there, I just go into those books. And it always goes with whatever I’m working on at the time; know what I’m saying.

Throughout your whole career you’ve always worked with DJ Paul and your brother, Juicy J on production. Have you ever thought about working with other people as well?

We’re actually in talks to work with some producers out in Atlanta, but other than that, nah man. We good down here, there’s no reason to go somewhere else. Like I said us people from down South are just stuck in our ways. [Laughs]

How is it like being able to work with your brother? Are you guys pretty much on the same page all the time?

Ah man, we do our thing. We have saying down here called “click-clack.” And in the studio we “click-clack.” It’s a gun referance, and that’s the noise you hear when one [bullet] goes in the chamber. So that’s just another way of saying that we go together really good. So if you’re cool with your boy, you’d say something like; “ yeah man, me and so-and-so click-clack.” And just how we do, we see eye-to-eye. So we go good together, know what I’m saying.

How would you describe your style of Hip-Hop to someone that wasn’t familiar with you?

I’d tell them straight up that I throw a twist on it. People always liked me from when I first started into Hip-Hop, so I’m going to role with the people. But really, I’m just blessed man, I’m blessed to be here, and to be a free man. So all praises are due to God. I love life and I ain’t wasting one moment of it. We’re all blessed and we’re going to stay that way.

Is the spot light something you’ve always felt good about being in?

Well everywhere that I go, people want to hear what I’m saying. So I’m on people’s minds, and I love it baby! I love it! [Laughs] So as far as that goes, people always want to see me, and shake my hand and find out what I’m doing. So I love it, and I embrace it. And I’m going to do that to the maximum.

Nowadays, the average Hip-Hop fan read Sound Scan numbers. Do you ever worry about first week sales?

Well of course, you always want to sell at least 100,000 copies the first week. [Laughs] When I went to jail back in 2002, my album got bootlegged really badly. It was bootlegged for about eight months. And when I came out, I still had sold 107,000 in the first week of its official release. So it’s all-good, I ain’t trippin’.
