40 Cal is one dude who knows what it means to build a buzz in the streets and have it on lock. Appearing in consistent rap battles after battles such as the Fight Club and many others to hold up his buzz the Diplomat comrade always came through to hold his own. Now when the opportunity came to be a part of the Diplomats offered by Cam’ron, 40 Cal took the opportunity at large and run with it all full speed. Before you knew it 40 Cal was on every Diplomat project you can name being the go-to guy to hit you wit that nasty punchline that made you G "Damn I got to rewind that". For example there was one line in which he went "Ya’ll like fourteen days, too weak for me", as you see he goes hard. As the grind continued for 40 Cal the mixtapes he was putting out were serving the streets well such as "40 To Life", "Trigger Happy", and "Broken Safety". Now 40 Cal to many is known as a battle rapper and now he wants to prove to you he can make a complete solid album with "Broken Safety 2" out right now Koch. Besides the album talk though 40 Cal shows love to Yo! Raps being a part of the Diplomats, why it’s important to maintain your buzz in the streets, and why on this album he got some tricks up his sleeve.
40 Cal you running with the Diplomats so how it feels to be a part of the heavy street grind, giving them heavy mixtapes, and coming out with an album? Aw man it feels good, I used to be a fan just like how a lot of people are now. Back in the day I used to cop mixtapes and the scene was popping so it feels good to be in this spot. Your one of the go-to guys in the crew, why you think the streets should fuck with 40 Cal? Because I bring that creativity back, to me I’m real hip-hop. A lot of people is a bunch of talk man with just a bunch of lyrics and shit. I’m the real thing and I proved it in a number of occasions. How you feel about Cam’ron giving you the opportunity to show people what you got to bring to the game? If it wasn’t for Cam I wouldn’t be able to go to the next level. With the new album how long you been working on it, tell me about it? The new project is crazy, I’ve been working on it for about a few months and I got everybody on there, the whole Dipset. First it was going to be like one of my regular mixtapes, but a lot of people heard it and was like "Nah this too crazy to just be a mixtape". They said it was an album and I just made it a little bit better. How important you think it was when you dropped them crazy mixtapes over the summer like "40 To Life", "Trigger Happy", "Broken Safety" how did you think it helped wit the promotion of this album making an impact for fans to check for it? That just let people know that I am working. I want niggas to know that I am a go-to guy you know what I’m saying. A lot of people don’t have the lane to put shit out, I’m just letting people know I put shit out when I feel like it. Once the project is done I’m a drop it. That’s what I’m gonna do, I’m not with the push-back shit and all that. I’ve been pushed back once in my whole career and that’s because Babygrande didn’t have the budget to fund this album so I went to Koch which is bigger and better. How it feels to be on Koch? Aw man it feels good, I’m talking to Alan and all that. He seen my views and they already know how to handle a Diplomat project. My whole thing is that as long as the record is in stores they gonna cop. Your know in the game for being a upcoming battle rapper giving crazy punchlines, will a lot of that be on the album or will we hear you on a different with the songs? Yes and no. Of course I got the crazy punchlines and shit I can’t even help that it’s gonna come-out regardless. It’s a lot of creativity on this album from the skits to everything, trust me it’s some shit on there. 40 what’s the whole deal with the Skeme Team you be shouting out, can you explain to people what is it? Oh yeah those are goons they help me sleep at night. They been with me since day one before I was down with the Dipset. They was a crew who always came with me, when I was on the Fight Club they be right behind me. I’m gonna bring them out after my whole situation and flood the market with them like a lot of people do so get used to them. You had a following in the streets for being a crazy battle-rapper, can you tell a lot of up-comers how to maintain your buzz in the streets? First is consistency and if you want to maintain your buzz you gotta stay in the studio everyday. Everyday is studio time, like how people smoke blunts it’s like that with studio time. We make the studio a fun atmosphere by doing what we do, we make it fun that we love going to the studio. That’s how you be consistent by staying on top of everything you do. What does 40 Cal love most about his music? When I do my music I don’t write it down, I make it on the spot. After I finish I listen to it like how a fan would listen to me so I know exactly how I’m sounding, getting that third person sound. Besides the music where else are you trying to go in the music game? I’m tryna make movies, that’s my next step. My last mixtape "Trigger Happy" I had some tracks called "40 Stories" on there. I just debut on how I was going with the music thing and it’s a spin-off of "Trapped in the Closet" with the different chapters and everything. I put a chapter on my new up-coming album, a the end of the day when I put it all-together everybody is going to see the genius about it, I’m a make a movie out of it. So what would make 40 Cal a good actor? [Laughs] Money, a lot of money... Hey it’s always good to have more than one hustle. Yeah you already know, you got to take it to the next level. A lot of this music is becoming more visual with the YouTube and shit like that so I’m a take it there. Yeah, the Internet is a hell of a marketing tool in this game right now. Hell yeah, the next album might just be all video having the music with the video so you can play it like that. It’s always another level so I’m a take it there. 40 with you being affiliated with the Diplomats do you know anything about the Cam’ron and Jim Jones situation? Not that much, because at the height when it was going on you didn’t want to talk about it. It seemed like it was mending itself and then it wasn’t so really when we get together we don’t talk about it like that no more. I don’t even know how the situation is, I’ll be lying if I told you right now. I always thought you should do a album with you, Hell Rell, and JR Writer, a triple threat album what you think? Yeah! We can experiment with that idea. That sounds like a best out, I know what you talking about. Yeah, ya’ll can give the streets that crack right there. Yeah we got "The Year Of The Gun" with me and Hell Rell. We got a lot of combinations we can put together, I know Duke Da God’s putting another collabo together so it’s a lot of things he got planned right after me. Hell Rell is out, Killa is waiting to drop his mixtape so it don’t stop. 40 what made you decide to come out on September 11th with Kanye and 50? Truthfully I already had that date before I even knew they were coming out. I was talking shit one day like I don’t change my release date for nobody I don’t care if God was coming out [laughs], I’m still coming out. That’s how I feel and that’s how it’s going to be. Well you know how it is in the game, you got to have confidence or your not going to make it? Man I ain’t with all that, I feel like if the fans like you they gonna buy you. If they like you they like you and that’s the whole point. That’s my whole formula in the way of thinking about it. If you mention 40 Cal the album might be right next to 50’s, because of the name [laughs]. 40 Cal to wrap it all up why fans should go out and cop this album? Truthfully out of everybody that’s coming out I don’t think none of them got these kind of punchlines I’m spitting. To tell you the truth if you want to hear shit like that with creativity on the project. I’m not gonna knock what they do, because thry probably got a couple things up their sleeve, but you know I got something up my sleeve [laughs]. Root for the underdog, that’s me and you already know I’m just like ya’ll. |
