In another ********* Q&A session, G Unit member Hot Rod spoke to Defsound.com and discussed his album, future plans with the family, beef with Game and problems with the media, and also speaks on the sexuality of Dj Khaled.

*********: How’d you get signed to G Unit? Where did this opportunity stem from?

Hot Rod: I sent a demo, and by the grace of God, 50 Cent heard my demo, and he thought I was amazing, so he personally gave me a call you know what I’m sayin’, and pretty much interviewed me over the phone. By the end of that whole conversation, he said, “I’m gonna fly you out to the New York, get you into the studio and make it happen.” I was like word, wow. It happened real, like in a crazy way, real fast. In my eyes, it didn’t happen over night, cause I’ve been rappin for years and years. It was seven or eight years. He heard my demo and liked it.

*********: Are you working on a solo album, and if so, are you working on it right now?

Hot Rod: I’m actually working on the album and still recording for it.

*********: You’ve been signed to G Unit for a while, and we heard your singles, and freestyles, what’s the hold up on the album?

Hot Rod: It’s all about timing, you know what I’m sayin’, the past three, no six months, June, May, since like May it’s been all Curtis. It’s Curtis time, so now nothing is gonna get in the way. That whole train you feel what I’m saying. It came out, and everyone was excited. You know after this, we’re gonna switch to other projects, like my project, the G Unit project, umm Yayo’s, Mobb Deep, you know we gonna switch back to the G Unit mode.

*********:Do You think your album is going to drop in 2007?

Hot Rod: : I’m thinking 08. It’s going to be before the G Unit album or right after it.

*********: So the G Unit album is going to be the whole family?

Hot Rod: Of course. Yeah.

*********: What projects are being worked on right now?

Hot Rod: Like I said, my album, and we working on the G Unit album. I’m working on my mixtapes, and just really recordin’, and I’m plannin’ on goin’ overseas. I gotta Europe tour, from October 18 – 28, and then rock over to Canada and that’ll be right after in November. So it’s like I’m doing shows here and there. After that, its mostly recordin’ and gettin’ these projects out.

*********: You mentioned you’re working on a mixtape. Any particular deejay’s you’ve been working with lately?

Hot Rod: I just dropped a mixtape, exclusive feature DJ Woogie, also hosted by me, Woogie and Big Mike. I’m also gonna drop a tape with Superstar Jay. That’s gonna come out next, and then after with DJ Robby Rob. So those are some of the projects that’s gonna come out right now.

*********: How is it working with 50 Cent? Is it a big brother, little brother relationship or is straight business? Do you guys hang out?

Hot Rod: It’s definitely a big brother, little brother relationship as well as business you know what I’m sayin. It’s a good mixture. We go into the studio anytime. But he is a big brother to me. 50’s been big in the industry for so long, and he’s so successful, so its natural that he’s passin down, his wisdom, his advice, and how to handle certain things and certain situations. There’s definitely that close connection. I don’t think what I know or do would be the same if I was at another label. It would only be business or another situation. G Unit is like a family, everyone comes together and shares their stories. Like I have conversations with Buck, Banks and Yayo….. all the artist on the label.

*********: Speaking of 50, we have a question from your fans and readers from *********.com. How did you feel when 50 Cent kicked you off the stage when you didn’t know the words to one of his song? You said it was a skit, but fans seem to disagree. What really happened?

Hot Rod: It’s really funny. I explained it already, like I do video blogs now. The situation was on the fly. The fly situation. The mics, the microphones were shitty, like they kept goin in and out. So the people at the show, they saw at the beginning of the show that I went back, and that I had to give the sound man the mic, cause it went out the first time. So I gave him the mic and I was sittin down, waiting for mic. So a lotta people were like oh he’s sittin down, during the show, this and that, but that was cause the mic didn’t work. So he gave the mic again, so we rockin and rockin, I’m tryin to say the ad libs, shit goes out again you know what I’m saying. So it was like an improvised situation.

*********: So basically it was mostly technical difficulties?

Hot Rod: Right, if you watch the footage, I’m sayin words, and you couldn’t hear me you know what I’m sayin, so 50 looks out, he grabs it and he says his shit and he has a smirk on his face. So then I went back, and then he goes on to say, “You know what, fuck it, if I can’t do it, then no one can”, and then they dropped, “If I can’t do it… dun dun dun… (referring to 50’s song), it went smooth. And you know, there’s gonna be fans out there, that’s gonna be like, “Ohhhh this nigga don’t know the words or he didn’t do nuffin, or this or that”, but that’s what they gonna say. You always have people who shine negative lie on shit and try to flip it, but the people at the show saw all that. That’s all I gotta say about that, and that’s how the whole situation went.

*********: It’s always like that, you always going to have hate in the game, and deal with people like that.

Hot Rod: Speaking of hate, on the Five Borough Tour, I actually was at the Brooklyn and Queens show. So at the Queens show, I was on the stage and rockin and being the hype man and hollerin with Banks, with Buck and Yayo, I had my mic and all that, I was doin my thing. So it was brought to my attention that on MTV.com, they put 50 has everyone on stage, you know Banks, Buck, Yayo and even Hot Rod, and then they put in parenthesis, who was not even given a mic or a mention. But that wasn’t even true. That’s the type of things I deal with. The people who weren’t at the show, read that, and go, “Ohhhhhhh.”

Def Sound: You’re right, people believe everything they read. The industry is grimey and gritty, but you keep doing your thing. that’s our (*********), outlook on things. You’ll get past all that.

Hot Rod: See, I’m a strong person. I already know I’m going to be invincible when the time comes. I’m not going to let this get me down. It’s so funny how people try to shit on a nigga or make a situation something that really didn’t happen. They didn’t even have to make it like that. I’m waiting for my project drop and it’s going to turn heads and do all the talking.

*********: We are definitely looking out for that. How did you feel when Buck tried to make peace with The Game? Is it something you would have done yourself?

Hot Rod: I think it was a real strategic move that I think Buck was trying to make. I’m not sure what it really was. Me, personally, I don’t have any situation or beef with Game. I came in after all that and the beef. I actually inherited the beef, you know what I’m sayin’. He actually said things about me, had his artist say things about me and he tried to go at me. A lot of the people think the beef is fake, and it was planned like some WWF or like that but it’s really not. People think its staged. At one point before I was signed or involved to the family I thought it was like that as well. But being in the game, I really saw it was some real shit. So like when I’m out or going to the club and all that, I gotta have my peeps with me, cause a whole crew of Game’s fan take it seriously, and try to start somethin’. And to answer your question, I wouldn’t go outta my way and squash the beef with Game or reach out. There is no telling what he would do. I don’t think Buck was really tryin to squash it, but he was really tryin to see what was poppin at the time. I was in Vegas when Game was there at the club, and Game was upstairs, and I was downstairs just listening, and Buck was just tryin to confront the situation was because it was a lot of talk. So he wanted to see what the Game was all about. That’s how he approached the situation.

*********: So a few months back, you took shots at SOHH.com. What was that all about?

Hot Rod: Well, that was another situation, where they were tryin to shit on me you know what I’m sayin. I used to never pay attention you know, but a lot of people and my friends who I deal with, were hittin me up and sent me the link on my sidekick. So I’m gonna click and read what’s going on. I read these sites now to see what’s on and stay in the loop. So I go to the site, and they have this blog, a whole blog dedicated towards me you know what I’m saying. The dude, I don’t know who the niggas name was, he was just shittin on me. So I had to respond.

*********: So if we don’t show you love, we can expect some bars thrown at us?

Hot Rod: (Laughs)

*********: Kanye West’s Graduation or 50 cent’s Curtis?

Hot Rod: CURRRRTISSS

*********: What do you think of him [Kanye] and his music?

Hot Rod: Kanye is a talented guy, he goes out there and gives it his all and you can hear that in his music.

*********: Have you heard anything from Fif since Kanye outsold him by 300k first week?

Hot Rod: I haven’t spoken to him yet, I’m actually on my way to the studio now, he’s probably up there.

*********: Do you think Def Jam bought those albums?

Hot Rod: Oh yeah definitely, just like they did with Jay, just like they did with Nas.

*********: How was it working with Mary J Blige?

Hot Rod: Well, originally the song was supposed to feature Olivia. So in a collective decision, 50 and Jimmy Iovine decided they wanted to Mary J on it. So we sent her the record and she thought it was hot, so she did her thing. Her and 50 are real cool, where they have a great relationship. So she held me down, and held 50 down and made the record hot. It was a good look…. a great look.

*********: What’s with Buck taking shots at Khaled?

Hot Rod: First is he gay unless you guys heard something? I mean if you listen to the way he talks, what does he say, DJ Khaled, oh…Hot Rod imitates in a feminine homosexual way ” We the beeeeeeeeeeeeest!!” You know the way he sounds and talks, I don’t know. People hit me up and say the same thing and hit me up on myspace and says shit like that and askin me. But Khaled, he’s being real disrespectful on Rap City and all. It was real obvious that he has a real problem with G Unit by with the whole, “Get Rich or Die Tryin”, I guess they were playin a game talkin about classic albums and all that. So Buck answered back and spoke his mind.

Yo, the G Unit album will be hot no matter what, even if it is the whole family, cause the GRODT soundtrack had everyone on it, and that shit was tight. But I do agree, I want the G Unit album to be the album that the first one wasnt, not that the first one wasnt hot, it was, but with 50, Banks, Buck and Yayo. I can see haveing Spider, and Hot Rod or Mobb Deep on a track or 2, but the way it sounds its gonna be more of a comp album then a G Unit group album. I'm all for a Re Up type comp album, to introduce the new members like Hot Rod, Spider, Fox, 40 Glocc, just like Em did with the Re Up, and what 50 did with the G Unit album for Banks and Buck. But the people want the G Unit album to be the real group album, they can drop a comp album too, thats fine. But since G Unit dont drop albums like that, like 2 or 3 a year, when you got Hot Rod's album, Spiders album, not that they will ever come out, but Banks album and Yayos album, 50's BISD, and shit, no way they will do a group album and a comp album. So more and more it looks like this album will be a comp album.
