Default 08/21/07 - 13 Questions With 50 Cent

08/21/07 - 13 Questions With 50 Cent

13 Questions With 50 Cent

Q-1:Does the fact that your new album is titled Curtis suggest that it will be more personal than your previous work? Then again, you’ve already shared a lot of your life story. What should we expect with this release?

Well it is a little more personal. It’s my third album, actually my grandfather is Curtis Sr., his firstborn is Curtis Jr., and I’m his first grandchild, Curtis III, so it made sense for me to title it Curtis. Plus, I like to take things that people… I try to take things that are negative, and make them positive, you know? So, Cam’ron was going, “Cur-tisss,” and now it’s my album.

Q-2:You’ve got a new the track with Justin Timberlake, and you’ve collaborated with a number of different artists on this album. How does it differ from your previous work?

Aw, man, it’s totally different. Like, for instance, the song you just made mention to, “Ayo Technology,” you haven’t heard me rap like that before. The cadence that I use on that record is something new for me. And I mean, going to collaborate with Justin, and Robin Thicke, and Mary J. Blige, and Akon, and Nicole from the Pussycat Dolls, it provided new pockets; new creative energy in the studio that made what I felt like is a different record, and the record that’s going to impact the hardest right now.

Q-3:Who are you feeling in the rap world right now? What do you listen to?

I’m not really listening to much rap music right now. I got a lot of old-school music still, that I’m playing, and you know what it is? When I’m actually creating music, I try not to listen to the hip-hop records that are going on, because I think, subconsciously, we steal from each other. If you’re listening to a record and it’s really hot, then you’ll be looking for something that feels like that, or that has a version of it, you know?

So I’ve kind of stayed away from it, but I mean, in hip-hop right now, I don’t even know… there’s not a lot going on. It's a lot of single songs, and there ain’t no real albums coming out, ‘cause the companies are making their money off of ringtones. While the life of that single is there, they getting their money off of ringtones, and they don’t have a production cost if they’re not manufacturing that single -- it’s just a direct ringtone sale, you know what I mean?

Q-4:Do you listen to anything outside of rap?

Yeah, I listen to Maroon 5. I like different music; I got Justin Timberlake’s album, the artists that I featured, I’m listening to a lot of their music. I got them when I was trying to figure out what it would sound like, us collaborating with each other. And then, I actually got into them. I like Robin Thicke’s album right now.

Q-5:Other rappers own clothing labels, sports teams, brands of alcohol; you have a clothing line and a brand of water, and I’ve also heard that you’re coming out with a line of condoms. Is that true?

Yes. Magic Stick Condoms. Yeah, I’m trying to figure out how to create a safe-sex campaign that isn’t... I just think the Rap-It-Up campaign is just so old that it’s ineffective. And to give myself interest in it, I need to figure out how I can get a vested interest in it. And that would be to create the actual condom company, and then to start the campaign.

Q-6:You're also involved in book publishing. What motivates you to develop your business in the ways that you do?

Well, music is publishing, also. On the music front, I’ve been writer of the year every year that I’ve released an album, And I released a book, From Pieces to Weight, which was my first book, based on my life story. It was on the best-sellers list for a while. And the traveling that I have to do in my career is making me more receptive to the idea of reading books. Like, magazines, I enjoy them, but I read the portions of the magazine that I’m interested in, then I’ve got four or five more hours left on the flight, you know? So, I started reading urban novels, and then I created a book set that had that feel, and all the writers that I collaborated with had previously been on the best-sellers list with other projects, so it all worked out.

Q-7:What’s your favorite car?

My favorite car right now… is my Impala. It’s a ’65, with a drop top. Red.

Q-8:Do you feel pressure to be a positive role model?

Well, I think, what we’d consider a positive role model, I think it’s impossible to actually be a role model. You know? ‘Cause I mean, I think on some level, you’ll have your flaws or defects of character, regardless. You just speak like a positive role model, and that’s just something that you’re being conscious of, and you make the decision, “I want to say positive things."

But, yeah, actions may make you appear to be someone else, when people actually find out what you’re doing. For me, without having every word come out of my mouth make me appear to be a positive role model, I’ll always be inspiring. Because I give them the truth. At the same time, I believe people have a little more interest in reading what I’m saying or hearing me speak because they know I ain’t gonna sugarcoat it.

Q-9:Do you consider yourself to be health-conscious? Do you have a workout routine? What do you do?

Yeah, totally. I have a nutritionist, and I have a personal trainer come round -- well I had one, for about six months, and then he went, so right now I don’t -- I’m still health-conscious, but I’m doing stuff I ain’t supposed to be doing, to tell you the truth. I ain’t on a strict regimen as I’ve been on, but then, I’ll get back into it.

Q-10:How do you celebrate your successes? When your album comes out, when you get an award, or land a big deal?

I just feel really good about my accomplishments. I haven’t had, like a party because a deal goes through or something like that. I don’t know. I need to develop that -- I need to have something that I do when things go right.

Q-11:Do you have any pets?

Yeah, I got four dogs. Blue-nose pit bulls. I don’t fight ‘em, though -- I ain’t like Michael Vick, you know what I mean? (Laughs.)

Q-12:You’re known for being exceptionally popular with the ladies. Do you have any tips to share with our readers?

Just be confident. I think confidence is the most attractive part of a person. Because, I mean, if they’re not confident enough to show you who they are, you don’t even know who they are. You can’t meet ‘em, so I mean….

Another thing, try again -- especially when you’re at the introduction phase. You meet someone, you ask them out or whatever it is, if she says no, you see her another day, you ask her again.

You gotta be persistent, because I mean today, somebody might be doing the right thing, she could have a boyfriend, or somebody she thinks is promising, and then, it feels good, so she’s telling you no today. Then tomorrow, she’s not sure about him no more. And you ask again, and it’s like, “OK, yeah, we can go out.”

Q-13: What are two things that people would be surprised to learn about you?

I don’t know, I’m really sensitive. And they don’t understand that, because my most comfortable feeling is anger. So I’ll get angry in response to… like, if you said something to hurt my feelings or you’re making me uncomfortable, I’ll get angry, and be ready to do something about it, but... some people are just bad people, like they’re just angry and do things all the time. Me, it’s because you bother me or you’re making me uncomfortable.

Another thing? Let me think. Well, you know, usually people who… I don’t have a problem removing people from around me. Like, they could be around for a long time, and I could get comfortable or used to them, and then I can just get rid of them. Yeah, like because sometimes, you gotta... you have no choice but to actually do it. But I’ve had to do it a few times. So, I can adjust to doing that.
