Default 07/23/07 - Sha Money XL : "Curtis is a real good album"

07/23/07 - Sha Money XL : "Curtis is a real good album"

7/23/07

By Ammo

Sha Money XL and 50 Cent, these two names seemed inseparable - but when the news came that Sha Money had decided to step away from his role as president of G-Unit Records to concentrate on his management duties for Lloyd Banks & Young Buck and on his company Money Management Group, many thought that this was the end of a great relationship. Well, let us give you the scoop first: it’s not. Now, with a new venture (Money Management Group) and some new artists, Sha Money XL is ready to conquer the (hip hop) world…again.

Before going into your new business, how did you have your first start in the music business?
I was at NYU and I entered as an intern at Def Jam. That was my first label experience. That was my introduction. I was also a member of the street team for Steve Stoute on Nas’ It Was Written Tour.

How did you come to work with Jam Master Jay? I met him when I was at Def Jam. I always knew that being in that building would help me to bump into one of these executives. What I did was to pre think of a conversation I would have with anyone who had power. So when I met Jam Master Jay, we were both from Hollis, I said it was an honour. He was in this room by himself, and I explained him who I was, what I did and where I was from, what I’m trying to get done and what I already got going on in the building. And he saw me as a smart kid, I had already produced that record “Angel Dust” for Cormega, I was making my name known and he took me under his wing.

Have you always wanted to be a producer or an executive? I always wanted to be an executive because producing is what my passion is. What I wanted to do is to be a businessman at the same time.

How you hooked up with 50? I met him with Jam Master Jay in Queens. I was listening to his stuff and I told Jay “This kid is amazing! I wanna work with him. Let’s meet him!” And Jam Master Jay brought him to the house and we started working together.

When you decided to start G-Unit? After 50 got shot in 2000, he came to my house in Long Island and we started to work on some songs. He used to bring his homeboys Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo to the crib. Their crew was already G-Unit but we made it a movement.

What was your role in the first stages of G-Unit? I was the first guy doing everything. I was the engineer, the manager, the producer and I even put the first mixtape together when we didn’t have a DJ. I did everything it took to make it.

As time went by, has your role changed? Yeah, right now my role is managing Lloyd Banks and Young Buck. I decided to concentrate on the management thing because I had some dreams to do certain things that I wanted to do and I couldn’t do them being president of G-Unit. 50 always stated that I was a great manager and that I should concentrate on it because I’m always bringing a lot to the table, chasing companies and all that.

Can we say that you have parted ways with G-Unit? No, I didn’t part ways with G-Unit. I’m still here, managing two of the best artists of G-Unit. I’m still handling their business and I’m still delivering music to the crew so it is not like we have part ways. It is just that I’m doing something for myself now.

I have read that you were tired of sitting in an office. What do you like the most about your job? I love being in the studio. Majority of the time I’m not in the office I’m in the studio. That was my preference. And I’m still able to email everybody, get calls, do conferences and handle the business while creating at the same time, mixing new records and being the rock & roll star that I am.

Was it a long term decision or did it happen overnight? It was a long term decision and an ultimate evolution of me as a person in this industry. I didn’t peak yet, I’m still climbing to the top. It wasn’t hard to choose because it was in my heart to do it. It was my destiny.

What is the best thing that you have learned from this experience? I learned how to be a leader; I learned how to work under extreme caution and pressure. I’ve learned everything good and bad about the industry and how to survive in it.

What are the bad things that you have learned? (Laughs) The bad thing… There is no friend in this industry. You have a few amount of friends, not a lot. I’m a person who is always helping people because I know how hard it is to make it in this industry and a lot of people I’ve helped are not the ones that are around me because they took advantage of my blessing to be able to help people. I’ve got a lot of disappointments in this industry because a lot of people are on the divide and conquer mentality.

Are there decisions that you wish you would’ve made in a different way? Some people I hired in the staff, I wouldn’t have done it because they were tearing up the chemistry. That’s the people around G-Unit who caused damage. When we started G-Unit, there was no one and only 4 of my friends helped me anyway they could and they are still around me ‘til this day. But the other people, who came after, only took advantage of the situation.

How is your relationship with 50? Has it changed with his success? Yeah, because we went from being with each other everyday to everyone having things to do, and to not seeing him that often. I would only see him in the office.

Do you feel that G-Unit has lost its appeal to the fans? Actually, G-Unit is getting back together and it’s a work in progress.

When you say everybody, do you mean Mobb Deep, M.O.P? No, I mean only the core of G Unit: 50, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo & Young Buck.

What is Money Management Group? It is a management group; we manage artists, producers, photographers, video directors and engineers. We are getting into any kind of industry: the film, the video game, the technology and of course the music industry. My hands are on everything, every aspect of this industry I’m getting knowledge on and I’m absorbing it very well.

What made you want to build it? Because it is about the expansion of hip hop. I’m all about wanting to be the one who sees the future. I saw the future with 50 and we made history. I want to make history again and a lot of money. I want to be one of the first to really go to the finish line.

What is your current roster? My current roster of artists is: Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, Hi Tek, Dj Whoo Kid, Jake One, Vitamin D, Tha Bizness, Black Jeruz, Chad B, Keyon and J, Chris Styles, Illmind, Nick Speed and a guy from Germany named Phrequincy.

What are your goals for Money Management Group? I want to secure deals that will help our lives and our success level moving forward whether it is clothing, whether it is film, whether it is labels, whether it is shows, we are doing it all over here.

You have recently inked a deal with Eidos for Traxxpad. Can you tell us more about it? Traxxpad is a game for PSP that we have designed. You can record, sample, sequence, pre EQ that sounds like a million bucks. You can do a lot more than some machines. It is very easy to use. You can export, put it on a hard drive and use it on Pro Tools. It is really tight.

What made you want to go the video game route? I’ve been doing a lot of scoring for video games, and I’ve met a lot of professionals in the industry and being in that community helped me to meet all the big players. My mind is designed for the future and like I said I want to be an innovator so I knew this was the next step and when everybody will be doing it guess what? Sha Money will be the name on top of the list.

What’s up with Loud.com? I am a producer out there and I’ve put some beats on the website so everybody can download them for a small amount of money and 2 track them, and record a song over them. Everybody who wants to spit on my beats, check out loud.com and you will be able to do it.

What are your new projects? I’m working on the new Tupac, Gorilla Zoe, new Hi Tek album, Young Buck’s compilation, The Outlawz, Lloyd Banks, Snoop, G-Unit and my new artist Riz from Harlem who’s incredible and my new R&B act Keon Bryce who is stupid with it.

What are you thoughts on 50 new singles? I love them, this shit is hard. Curtis is a real good album.

Have you got any last words? Everybody go check out my new artist Riz, he’s on Youtube. The name of the crew is SelfMade, we all made it ourselves. New York is in the building. I’m coming with it. Be on the lookout.

Sha Money's comments about G-Unit are interesting, especially when he says that only the 'core' of G-Unit are getting back their appeal, not the rest.

Check out photos from 50's MTV show the other night with all the G-Unit members here...

Sha is saying that the real G Unit is getting back to do this album. Now there probably will be others on it, but I hope they stick to mostly just the core 4 for this album. Anyway, about a year ago, Miss Info from Hot 97 said she went to this Asian hip hop thing, where she met IllMind, if you notice he is signed to Shas shit, he is a Phillipino producer, anyway, she said he played 2 beats for her, by the way he was with G Unit already, but she said 1 beat was possibly for Detox, and 1 was for 50s album, BISD. She said that these beats were so fucking crazy, she used the words "Murder, Insane, Crazy", saying that this kid has talent. With that said, I highly doubt his shit will end up on Detox, with the amount of producers who want on Detox, some kid with no catalog aint getting on. But I def want to hear what this kid has, he was said to be the next Storch, JR Rotem.
