Default 07/19/07 - interview with Slick Pulla

07/19/07 - interview with Slick Pulla

WorldWideConnected.com: When did you start rappin?

It was something that I did all the time . Me growing up an only child I had to entertain myself. I used to listen to albums all day long! Even if I was on the block or anywhere - I was rappin. It all feels kind of funny to us because we are new to this but seeing the big homie going thru it we are brought in with wisdom. We are young in the game but we have seen a lot of stuff thru the big homie.

WorldWideConnected.com: What does your family think about your success?

They are all very proud of me and I got a lot of responsibility because I gotta make sure my family is straight. Right now everybody is supporting me and just sitting back letting me do what I gotta do.

WorldWideConnected.com: How does it feel to be on a powerhouse label like Corporate Thugs?

It feels hella good and this is something I have been down with ever since the homie got me down off of Irving Street. The main thing about this whole thing is that I get to be me, I get to be Slick Pulla. I’m not rolling with someone who says “Change this" or "You shouldn’t talk about this”. I get to do me! Nobody has to do anything that they are not happy with doing. In life in general I’m good! I get to be me everyday and that is a blessing because a lot of labels want you to be somebody that you aint. If something is stankin’ in there the world can smell it!

WorldWideConnected.com: Even though you're on the level you are, you still keep it street. What inspires you do stay that way when so many others go more mainstream?

I just went home the other day and I went straight up the boulevard and I don’t feel like going home and just sitting in my house because I gotta go out in these streets man. For me there is no other way dawg!

WorldWideConnected.com: What is the name of the album?

The name of the album is "Cold Summer" and it is dropping May 22nd. The lead single is "White Girls" and next week we are shooting the video for "Corporate Thuggin’" and that is gonna be real big. You need to get you and your crew down there!

WorldWideConnected.com: I noticed a lot of you guys on the label are from other areas. Blood Raw is from Florida and isn’t there some new acts from California on the label?

We got 211 from Inglewood and we also got Roccett from New York. We are spread out state to state East to West and Down South. We got a whole roster and this is just the beginning. Everybody on the roster be spittin’. Aint nobody be slacking! We are giving it to you in sections!

WorldWideConnected.com: Do you have a solo in the works?

I got one in the works and I don’t have a title just yet. I might call it “The Trapublican” or I might self title it. I might go in and pick about ten that I like and record about twenty more because what we learned was to work smart.

WorldWideConnected.com: What about features?

You gotta go hard on the features. When I listen to music and when I hear a cat that I like not come hard it fucks me up because I’m like “Damn, he should of came harder than that!” Even on features you got to come hard because they are listening hard!

WorldWideConnected.com: Every good team has it’s team players who all have roles that they play, what roll do you play for the team?

I’m the triple threat man with the lyrics, delivery, and mic presence. I’m the clinch player and if you pass me the ball in the wing I’m either gonna dunk it or I’m gonna lay it up on your ass. I hold it down and my presence is gonna be felt but I’m not the type of person who will over shadow what Raw is doing. I play my roll and when it is time to crank it up and go into over drive, I do. When somebody drops a sick beat I will!

WorldWideConnected.com: The South still has a strong hold on the game! Where do you see the South in five years from now?

I see things coming in from all different directions and I see the game developing. I got some real street cats coming home from down the road and it is just gonna blossom man. Everybody is doing something! People see me and they be like “Slick did his shit and I know I could do it because he is talking about the same shit that I do.” It just feels good to know that you put that in someone’s heart and mind because everybody is saying the same thang “I’m trying to get u[p out this mutha fucka and do the same thang ya’ll doing.” That’s beautiful! A lot of cats say that hiphop in general is fucked up but if it is not your cup of tea you don’t have to listen to it because these same cats who you are saying shit about are the same cats that if they weren’t doing nothing they would be robbing yo’ ass or in the hood slangin. You still have to show love though because this shit changed lives and it changed mine and I can guarantee I would still be out there. This shit has helped change my life!

WorldWideConnected.com: It sounds like rappin’ came in for you at a perfect time?

IT did because I was out there in the trenches everyday all day. I have been thru a lot of shit but I am greatdful that I made it out with my life and my freedom. This is a big thing for us right here because of where we all came from and what we have been thru. Blood Raw almost got locked up for life and he is here today to talk about it. This album means a lot to us because of what happened and how it might now have ever came out.

WorldWideConnected.com: How did yall get thru that?

We just had to maintain and be strong and keep moving. That is all that you can do!

WorldWideConnected.com: I like your nickname the "Trapublican".

I gotta lotta alias names. MY Uncle passed away from Multiple Sclerosis when I was young but he was a real nigga in the streets. He was always giving niggaz nicknames and I guess that is where I got it from. You can call me Slick Pulla the man of many names.

WorldWideConnected.com: What would you be doing if you were not rapping?

If I wasn’t rappin’ I would be making another living. I’m not saying it to glorify the shit I’m just saying to be real in society because I got a felony. I’m not gonna get a good job period! What else would I do? Niggaz don’t get in the trenches because they want to get in the trenches niggaz get in the trenches because of the circumstances. Life is real and sometimes shit happens and sometimes you have to do what you got to do. I’m a good nigga but sometimes when it is rough it is survival of the fittest. It is like the National Geographic when animals have to kill to eat. It aint something people want to do because don’t nobody say “When I grow up I want to do that!” Its some wild shit!

WorldWideConnected.com: Back when you were growing up what were you listening to?

I was bumpin’ Pac, UGK, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Hot Boys, Juvey and all that. I am man of lyrics so if you are coming with some heat I’m on that.

WorldWideConnected.com: Back then did you pay attention closely to the game?

Back then I would listen but I was using that shit for the wrong kind of energy because eI didn’t have no pops or brother to teach me the game. I had a couple of older homies but with the music I was listening to that shit and it was helping me get money. I’m the only child so I was out there by myself. I tried the school thing and it didn’t work so I had to play these trenches. The main thing the music did for me was put me on game!

WorldWideConnected.com: You got further than I did in school. I didn’t even graduate!

Yeah and I went to college for a whole semester but it got rough.

WorldWideConnected.com: At least you gave it a shot and tried other alternatives!

Yeah I did what I could! I went in there and tried what I could in order to better my situation but the trenches is what came calling for me and all I can say is thank god for rap. IT really did improve my life and it kept me from the trenches.

WorldWideConnected.com: I’m happy to see that the rap game is doing good for you!

Thank you! This morning we just had a listening party and everybody gave us love. I thanked the big man upstairs for all of this. There aint a day that don’t go by where I am thankful for all of this because of what I went thru in the streets. I went from that to this and I am truly blessed to be here right now.

WorldWideConnected.com: You are an inspiration to people!

I hope people can see that and grind harder in their life to make a change and do what they have to do to live better because that is what it is all about. It is all about bettering your situation and the ones that are close to you. I got a lot of people who I have to make sure is right. This is bigger than rap!

WorldWideConnected.com: IS there anything else?

May 22nd Cold Summer is coming so put on your gloves and your hoodies because May is gonna be cold.
