The Telegraph Gives Eminem's Relapse 4 Stars Outta 5

It is customary for Eminem records to announce that he is back, but this time he really has been gone. It is five years since the controversial rap superstar's last album. On a skit confrontation with his record company boss, he is accused of being personally responsible for the music industry's meltdown: "You know how many people lost their jobs because of your ----ing vacation?"

But it is a period that has seen the real Marshall Mathers in his own private meltdown and at the core of his astonishing comeback are self-lacerating confessions of struggles with addiction to prescription drugs.

With a brio that can still make us gasp at his verbal dexterity and audacity, he describes falling "into bed with a bottle of meds and a Heath Ledger bobblehead".

Sober and revitalised, Eminem has dropped his own often substandard production work to let original musical collaborator Dr Dre handle backing tracks.

Dre conjures up hypnotic, plastic, funky grooves from two and three note motifs, springboards for Eminem to bounce off.

Over 20 relentless tracks, he piles rhyme on top of rhyme till you're brain hurts trying to keep up. Funny and furious, the album is a virtuoso display to make young pretenders (like Asher Roth) sound like rank amateurs.

Yet in Eminem's deliberately provocative milieu self-disgust is never too far from plain disgusting.

Half the album gives all-too-free reign to his Slim Shady persona. Horror-themed serial-killing raps, fuelled with tongue-in-severed-cheek bigotry, are full of stomach-churning imagery in which celebrity targets like Mariah Carey and Amy Winehouse are subjected to rape, murder, foul-mouthed misogyny and rampant gay bashing.

It is as if he feels the only way he can maintain attention is by ramping up the shock content, but there is something innately dispiriting about this being the chosen oeuvre of the greatest lyrical talent of our times.

He is more effective when he turns on himself. During his days as America's most reviled, his defence for lashing out at all and sundry was "I am what I am" but on My Mom (a typically merciless attack on his upbringing and his mother's alleged abuse of Valium) he twists it to "I am my mom". The self-revelation of brutal truth is sometimes the most shocking thing of all.
