G-Unit: T.O.S. Review
Curtis and Company Are Back And Fully Loaded

July 2, 2008 - 50 Cent and company are back with their second G-Unit album and this time around Tony Yayo is no longer on a tax-payer-supported vacation on the beautiful island of Riker's, Lloyd Banks is now an entrepreneur in the adult entertainment industry, and the group is sans Young Buck save for a half dozen or so appearances which prove to be some of the highlights on this album.

Changes aside, the trio wastes little time, starting the album with the blaring "Straight Outta Southside" on which they give a little introduction to themselves and set the listener up for what is to come with 50 declaring that "niggas looking like cookies 'n cream to me". On the musical end of the spectrum the group doesn't seem to be suffering from distorted vision or impaired hearing as they did a stellar job of picking beats for this project, calling on producers such as Ron Brownz, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, and Polow Da Don to provide them with enough gritty soundscapes to go around. That said, beat selection is similar to previous G-Unit efforts and doesn't offer many surprises. "Casualties of War", a Ky Miller production, proves to be a thick, undulating track thanks to the extensive use of strings while elsewhere on the album Ky flips a Bollywood sample on "You So Tough", which features a lone violin placed over a dominant drum line.

50, Banks, and Yayo all manage to make their deliveries sound effortless, although they are not matched with a depth of lyrics. For the most part T.O.S. seems to be the Unit's reaffirmation of their street cred, with almost the entire album serving as a warning to all comers not to mess with them unless they want to be dealt with. 50 makes it clear on the intro alone, viciously glaring: F@#k with me the police gonna have to get me. Later, on "Casualties of War", Banks further boasts that the Unit hasn't gone soft.

Banks is on top of his game, redeeming himself from his aptly titled solo effort Rotten Apple.. Meanwhile Yayo continues his stylistic screaming, making it more artistic than on Predicate Felon. As for 50, he shows signs of possibly being able to revive the Curtis we all loved on Get Rich or Die Trying. While each member makes noticeable improvements on the individual side of things, they also do a good job of complementing each other, bringing about generally enjoyable tracks. As for Buck, among his strongest verses are the 16 bars he drops on the tipsy-sounding "Party Ain't Over" on which he boasts, "I got Vitamin Water money like I signed a deal, how would you feel if you niggas just got 400 mill?"

One thing missing from this album—and for the better--are the obligatory thug love songs (hardcore G-Unit fans will no doubt recall that a few of these mellower styled tracks did make their way onto the crew's first foray, Beg For Mercy). The result of all this (i.e. lack of thug love songs, greater emphasis on being hard) is a gutter album which may help Curtis appear to be a killer again.

For the most part T.O.S. sees the infamous trio back on the scene and proving that they are still relevant. Basically, good beats, strong deliveries, and the occasional Buck appearance make this album worth a few listens. A problem with this album, however, is that is hard to believe the numerous warnings thrown out by 50 and company; will the Unit really throw bullets and not bottles of Vitamin Water? While questionable, it's probably best not to try too hard for an answer. If anything their ominous boasts ultimately make for an entertaining album. Other than that, the only think missing from the album is the group's trademark yell. So, to make up for the lack of it on the album everybody throw your hands in the air and yell: "G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G- G Unit!"

thats a pretty good review but i dont see why all the reviews are saying bucks verses were the best part of the album. they were average at best
