10/28/07 - Jay Z "American Gangster" Review

Jay Z is back with his tenth studio album, titled American Gangster -a "concept album" which is inspired by the film of the same name.

After his last album Kingdom Come - which received mixed reviews it seems Jay hasn’t improved his lyrical content and still shares the same annoying tone of voice at the end of each sentence.

The album's first two tracks including the intro bare no meaning and are nothing more then boring. "Pray" which features Beyonce's pointless reading of biblical texts, contain's no substance and skips back and fourth beyond many subjects. "American Dream" which features a Marvin Gaye sample is much like the previous song, there is a subject buried in there which pops up every now and again but you end up wanting not to take any notice because your minds to focused on hoping the next tracks bare's no resemblance to the previous two. Which it does'nt the song titled "Hello Brooklyn 2.0" which strangely features on/off beef partner Lil' Wayne is light-years away from the hip hop featured on "Pray" and "American Dream". The very southern beat with it's cheap sounding hand claps does'nt sound like it would be on a typical Jay Z album. It features a good first verse from Jay which features some witty lines, then the Lil Wayne hook enters who to date I still haven’t came up with a comparison for his weird voice and the song slowly rolls down hill from there.

Ironically the song to follow is titled "No Hook", which is on song to late. The beat is very similar to the first of the album and so are the lyrics. No hook and no subject, it seems as if Jay has already told us his story in his last 9 album's he's now just picking at the bone to see if there’s anything left and if there is it really isn’t that tasteful.

"Roc Boys" is the scheduled to be the second single; it has a much livelier persona and features nothing more then lyrics about flaunting and success.
"Sweet" seems like it's used the exact same instrument library as the previous tracks minus Hello Brooklyn - and again it features the same lyrical content, there’s no subject and just the thought after thought lyric with absolutely no substance.

Skip "I know", "Party Life", "Ignorant Shit" and "Say Hello" and we end up at "Success" featuring previous rival and now label mate Nas. Here we see a more familiar Jay, but more notably we see a successful verse from Nas who stole the limelight on this track - making you rewind it to make sense of what he just said - and smile at the ones you easily relate too "Google Earth Nas I got flats in other continents".

"Fallin" is a breath of fresh air and contains a lot more substance and genre, the same with pharrel produced "Blue Magic".

Overall verdict is that this album is nothing more then a promotional tool for Universal Studios film of the same title name. Disappointed with Kingdom Come and even more so with American Gangster. There is no concept to this album, just uncountable references to drugs and crack cocaine - but nothing that stays in your mind or that you will be able to relate to in the movie. Why Jay believed he needed to release and record this album so quickly I think we will never know, I would love to say "however..." right about here but there is nothing to point out that can convince you to buy the album. It has it's flaws like many albums and that’s about all it has, If my verdict's right Jay Z is bound to come under some heavy criticism the coming months.

i liked the album except for a couple of tracks, fallin is one of my favorite tracks. i really dont like that success track ft nas, the beat is just so gay and boring, ruins the whole track.

i liked the album 2. Favorite joints : Blue Magic , Fallin & Succes.
Not his best work , but maybe it's a grower like Blueprint was ( if ya ask me!)
