If anyone has not yet embraced the fact that hip-hop, through a main-stream perspective, is a dying breed; after listening to the musical styling of Soulja Boy in his debut album, Souljaboytellem.com., I'm sure that the truth will become evident. Before I start analyzing the music, do not take it as me just hating on the kid; I’m just not diggin’ the music he’s putting out. Overall we all should give props to him for putting out a monster single, “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”, which has hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. With that single, he has also captivated many people, thus amassing a large quantity of fans at just the young age of seventeen! However writing your name on sunglasses or creating a dance which entices the youth, does not create good music.

In the album, it features many songs that are usually intended for clubs with the simple rhythmic beats and lyrics which flow on the simple beats, giving them the club feel. Many of the songs all contain somewhat of a similar flow or styling of beat, giving the whole album no songs which distinct one kind of style from another. “Crank That (Soulja Boy) is the song which swept the nation with its catchy tune and of course, that “crank dance.” The song is highly club material and contains, as far as I can interpret for the moment, no real deep meaning. With lines such as “Supersoak that hoe” you can immediately infer that the song has nothing to offer but catchy tunes and a beat to dance to. On the contrary to this, he put out songs “Soulja Girl” and “Don’t Get Mad” which provide a slower feel and intend to appease to the deep minded; however it fails to deliver the message in a serious and articulate manner.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m kinda tired of this bape fad; however that ain’t so with Soulja Boy. His dedication to that bathing ape in his song titled “Bapes”. It is a repetitive song which boasts his “amazingly original” style in dressing with those oh so famous Bapes; declaring “I got me some bapes.” He does the same kind of thing in the song “Side Kick”, rapping over the greatness of the simple cell phone. What about that iPhone? I mean if this dude wants some sponsors, you gotta’ earn them. Bad songs aside, I do have to give him some credit for actually for spitting out something quite creative and funny. In the song titled “Report Card”, he says in the intro, “I took out my report card today and I had all F’s on it…I took it back to the teacher and told her to throw some D’s on that.” But following the line comes another snap/crunk styled dance song.
The style of the whole album is very much snap, club, and crunk. Many of the songs are steered in the direction of appeasing to the majority of listeners who feel the simplistic beats rather than the lyrical contents. It is not at all impressive and delivers simple catch phrases and repetitive beats. Because of its simplistic beats and the ridiculous lyrics, in the album I feel that this album is by the far one of the worst things yet in the hip-hop game, only standing either as bad or equal to the Shop Boyz, Rockstar Mentality. It is another album which yet again brainwashes and influence the majority of teens, especially in suburbia, how to just party and act dumb. I only give Soulja Boy these words; you need some serious work.
