4.5 out of 10
![]() Soulja Boy became known in the same way as Sean Kingston, the internet. Sean Kingston through myspace Soulja Boy through youtube. His debut album will be released October 2nd but like all hip hop/r&b albums this year, it got leaked about 2 week before. So as of this review i've listened to the entire CD 2 times in 2 days(some songs multiple times).... I would say only 35% of the album is him rapping the rest is him chanting, yelling, repeating a hook. Hes only 17 so he don't talk about club life or alcohol like Hurricane Chris. And from picture of him before he was famous and him singing about $300 phones and expensive clothes he didn't grow up poor in a bad neighborhood like Nas. So you cant blame him for not talking about anything of substance...Subject matter ranges from: failing grades in school, to cell phones, to girls, girls asses, to trendy clothes, dancing, and dancing... The album was produced completely by him, supposedly, and he was only like 15 or 16 when he made the beats so i give him a 8 out of 10 for beats. The whole album actually has good beats, they catchy beats but were designed for the kind of songs he makes, not for all rap artist... Ima end review with a quote form someone from another hip hop forum who i think put what i was thinking in pretty good words: "i dont have a problem with Soulja Boy. He's there for the clubs. Period. Its a party record and it definitely has its own market. He prolly wont sell shit.. But the beats are simple and fun, and the dumb shit he talks about is catchy. Its absolutely NOTHING wrong with having some fun songs that are there for that purpose only. He's not trying to make you think (obviously) He just wants to make you and your friends look dumb trying to do his dance.. But its all in fun. So as long as he KNOWS his turf and doesnt try to pop shit like he's lyrical or something he has his pass." Top 5 Songs in Order: Crank That Yahhh! Let Me Get Em Snap and Roll Don't Get Mad(raps more than usual, about haters) |
