09/12/07 - Kanye West - Graduation (The Gunit 2050 Review)

1. Good Morning
This track starts off with a nice "dreamy" kind of beat. Actually feels like you're waking up. Kanye's flow is great on this. Good production. He added a sample of Jay-Z at the end that doesn't really need to be there, but still 5/5 Stars

2. Champion
This is a feel good track. Makes you wanna go party, feels like you're on a island or something. Fantastic production and flow from Kanye. He basically talks about his child hood and how well his dad treated him. Very uptemo. Line to look out for is, "Lauryn Hill said her heart was in Zion, I wish her heart was still in rhymin." 5/5 Stars

3. Stronger
Probably the best track on the album. Kanye's 2nd single. Production is amazing. Feels like the robot, but it's sick. Kanye kills this track with his rhymes. Hot line. "Lets get lost tonight, you can be my black Kate Moss tonight." Song is about getting this chick he's been eyeing all night in the club. You'll have this one on repeat. 5/5 stars

4. I Wonder
This track starts off very oddly. Kind of has a sense of deepness to it. Kanye doesn't actually rap on this song until the very end. He basically talks like he's out of breath. He's talking about his dreams. Honestly I think it's rather creative though. Production is fantastic. 4/5 stars.

5. Good Life ft. T-Pain
This song is basically about what the name says. Kanye's 3rd single. Just living it up. This is another feel good track and Kanye's 3rd single. He samples 50 cent's verse, "50 told me go head and switch the style up and if they hate then let them hate and watch the money pile up." and a line to look out for is, "we be liking the girls who ain't on tv cause they got more ass than the models". I tend to skip this track, gets a bit tedious after awhile. 4/5 stars.

6. Can't Tell Me Nothing
This track has a dark feeling to it. Kanye's 1st single. It talks about getting your life right and getting your money right. I don't particularly like this song. You can hear a sample of Young Jeezy in the background of the track which doesn't really need to be there. Line to look for is, "If the devil wears prada, adam and eve wears nada then i'm in between but way more fresha." Another track I skip. 3/5 stars

7. Barry Bonds ft. Lil' Wayne
The beat on this is insane!! The chorus is great when he drops, "And heres another hit, Barry Bonds!" This may be the best production on this album, it's grimey. Not something you expect to hear Kanye flowing on, more of a Jay-Z beat. He makes a funny line about doing pretty good in his "Pink Polo". Lil' Wayne does some very silly rhyming on this track which could of been done without. Still 5/5 stars

8. Drunk and Hot Girls ft. Mos Def
This song feels like it belongs in a horror movie. Again Kanye isn't rapping. Its about what the title says, going through mess to get the drunk and hot girls. Productions is okay, but the rhyming is just horrible. You expect some sort of Thriller routine and dead ppl walking around to appear. Skip... 2/5

9. Flashing Lights Ft. Dwele
Nice production. Kanye really kicks it with his flow on this. Dwele's chorus is rather annoying though. Lines to look for are, "Feelin' like Katrina with no Fema, like Martin with no Jeanna". 3/5 stars.

10. Everything I Am
Very low-tempo track. Kind of depressing really. He talks about how everything he's not has made him everything he is today. I can't see myself to listening to this to much, makes you feel bad for Kanye even though he's doing so good. It's moving though so 4/5 stars.

11. The Glory
I love the way this track starts off with the lil' kid singing at the top of his voice. I can feel this is gonna be a classic. He talks about more of the good life. Line to look for is, "Hammer's flashed so much that I gotta do that Yayo dance". Great production, not very up-tempo but it makes ya feel good. 5/5 stars

12. Homecoming ft. Chris Martin
Kanye sampled this beat. He features Chris Martin from Coldplay on this track, I didn't think it would work out. But surprisingly it's rather good. Kanye's flow is good, and Chris really rides the chorus nicely. I don't think I'd listen to this track to much, but it's great. Something fans outside of hiphop can vibe to. 5/5 stars

13. Big Brother
Kanye did what The Game did with Doctor's Advocate. He wrote a song to his mentor, as in Jay-Z. Something feels very odd about hearing another man talk about another man who's not family so passionately. Truth be told though, without Jay-Z who would Kanye really be? Kind of like Puff Daddy without there ever being a B.I.G. I suppose. I find this song very disturbing. I guess he wanted to honor Jay, but it's still very odd. But I can't lie, production is on key and the lyrics are powerful. 5/5 stars

14. Bittersweet ft. John Mayer
The bonus track. This is a shocker. I guess if there were ever to be a rapper to work with John Mayer it would be Kanye. This song is kind of a love song. About being in a relationship thats shaky. A line to look out for is, "Have you ever felt you ever want to-kill-her, and you mix those emotions with tequila". This song feels like, "harmony". Its the best way I can describe it. Even though I myself could never get into a song like this, it's very creative. I didn't expect to hear something like this. 5/5 stars

15. Good Night ft. Al Be Back & Mos Def.
Bonus track #2. Something sounds kind of messed up about the production on this. Like when they made the beat something messed up and they couldn't fix it, sounds like static is covering the beat. Its yet another low-tempo track. This is referred to in the song as a "Hood Musical". I feel he probably could of stopped the cd at Big Brother or Bittersweet. 2/5 stars

Final Thoughts:
While this album is decent, It's no College Drop-out or Late Registration. Unlike Kanye's previous records, he doesn't give us anything new. On C.D. he gave us Jesus Walks, The Workout Plan. On L.R. he gave us Gold Digger, Touch The Sky, and Heard 'Em Say. With this album though, most songs are really low-tempo. The only real innovative track I feel is "Stronger", which he samples Daft Punk on in order to get that effect. While this cd is good, College Dropout & Late Registration surpass this easily. If you're a die hard Kanye fan though, you'll enjoy it.

and college dropout was like grodt, flawless.

this mess is to low-tempo, i can listen to it for a few minutes but then i gotta turn it off. i only play stronger and barry bonds, i can't get into slow a$$ music...
