Default 09/10/07 - Kanye West: Graduation (Brief)

09/10/07 - Kanye West: Graduation (Brief)

Today supposedly marks the showdown between the new albums from US hip hop stars Kanye West and 50 Cent.

To his credit, Kanye has always seemed more fun than surly Fiddy; unlike his 'adversary', he's also revealed his material in time for review – so, is he champ by default?

Well, the prettily packaged Graduation isn't really a 'beef' record; it's essentially more self-congratulation from the Atlanta-born rapper/producer.

It's never entirely clear whether this designer geek is sniping at consumerism (as on Can't Tell Me Nothing) or gagging for it (on Good Morning, where he clumsily drawls: 'I'm like the fly Malcolm X, buy any jeans necessary').

His rewiring of Daft Punk makes recent chart-topper Stronger a knockout, although it echoes Busta Rhymes, and Missy Elliott's rave epiphany on her 2002 album …So Addictive.

Meanwhile, Drunk And Hot Girls, featuring Mos Def, is shockingly limp. The bravado subsides into something more interesting towards the album's close, as Kanye tackles sibling pride and rivalry in Big Brother, dedicated to Jay-Z; and Chris Martin contributes to the mellow Homecoming.

But Graduation doesn't ascend to new musical levels – by Kanye's standards, it's a C-grade pass.
