05/07/07 - worst review of Dr. Dre - The Chronic ever...

People will try and tell you that this album is some kind of landmark or that it changed hiphop. These people are commonly known as “stupid”. The Chronic is neither hideously bad nor divinely good. It is incredibly mediocre. It has been accredited as the album that spawned the genre of “G-funk”, but was that necessarily a good thing?? All this achieved was furthering the gentrification process that hiphop was already going through and the main perpetrator was, rather than being the Dre- the guy whose name credits the album, a certain Snoop Doggy Dogg.

Surprisingly Snoop doesn’t sound as awful as he seems to in everything else in The Chronic. This is maybe because the beats go with his style more. The quality of songs like “Bitches Ain’t S**t” and “Stranded On Death Row” is actually added to by him.

If its depth you’re looking for here, you are in the wrong place. Every track seems to be either the portrayal of an incredibly biased view of white people or a random jumble of gangster related words that barely even form coherent sentences. The beats however partially make up for this. Dre delivers some quite raw material as a producer, especially in my favourite track on the album, “The Day The Niggaz Took Over”. However, the length of The Chronic takes even more from it. There are only twelve full tracks, including the secret track, which in my view is quite pathetic.

The Chronic provides offensive material directed towards the vast majority of the people who will end up listening to it. “Bitches Ain’t S**t” is a clearly sexist song and even degrades women further by getting a female soul vocalist to sing about how crap women are. Similarly, stuff like “The Day The Niggaz Took Over” is clearly racist against white people and generalises about a whole race based upon the actions of a proportion of it. Homophobic lyrics are also prese nt and Dre even manages to have a go at dead people in “A Nigga Witta Gun” with the lyric “If you die you’re a buster ‘cause real ******s don’t die!” which seems ironic when Dre comes back in 2001 whinging about how some guy’s died.

If you are looking for something to perhaps play at a club as a crowd pleaser or to entertain you briefly before you get bored of the lack of subject matter, The Chronic will suit you. However, if your craving is for something more meaningful, don’t waste your money.

Word Homie..if you're a TRUE hip-hop fan, the review isn't total BS, it may not be agreeable to all who read, but hip hop is more then just a gangsta image, and for most black people it's oppressive, don't get me wrong, I love The Chronic album and I listen to it regularly, but it isn't a spectacular album by any means.

i agree with some of this. most of the snoop verses were timeless. the beats were dope too but this album isnt the 5/5 that everyone gives it. 4.5/5 in my book.

At the time The Chronic was released, whether you want to believe it or not, it was ground-breaking which is why it's held as a great album today.
